The temperature taking technique is the general cause for a low reading. We recommend that you practice using the ear thermometer on yourself and other family members when you are healthy. This will improve your technique and you will feel more confident of the measurement you take when someone is ill. Completely read the instruction manual. A low reading can be caused by an ear infection.

Accuracy of an incubator thermometer can be checked by placing a medical thermometer and an incubator thermometer in a pan of 100 degree F water, or take a good thermometer from the science storeroom and place it next to the incubator thermometer in the incubator at 100 degree F.

If you have recently installed Defensio, then try to be patient. The filter's learning algorithms take some time (usually no more than a couple weeks) to become very effective, so in the early days of installing the filter performance might not be what you'd hope for. Alternatively, if your blog receives a low amount of spam (say less than 100 comments per week) Defensio will have a smaller sample set to draw from, and may not perform to expected levels.

Ear wax (cerumen) is normal in healthy ears. The purpose of cerumen is to moisturize and protect the skin of the ear canal and to trap dust and particles before they reach the ear drum. Cerumen is formed in the outer part of the ear canal. Normally, wax makes its way to the outer opening of the ear canal, flakes up, and falls out.

Most of the time, otitis media clears up with proper medication and home treatment. In many cases, however, further treatment may be recommended by your physician. An operation, called a myringotomy may be recommended. This involves a small surgical incision (opening) into the eardrum to promote drainage of fluid and to relieve pain. The incision heals within a few days with practically no scarring or injury to the eardrum.

Glue ear' is a condition which arises when a young child's inner ear become blocked through colds, 'flu or ear infections. It is also known as 'conductive hearing loss'. 'Glue ear' is the main cause of acquired dyslexia, as a child is not able to hear spoken speech clearly enough to distinguish the separate sounds which make up each word. It is essential at an early age for the brain to be able to hear the separate parts of each word and to learn to recognize these sounds.

Some people have more wax then others. Earwax is okay unless it blocks the ear canal and causes a hearing loss. We do not recommend cleaning your ears at home. It is wise to see a physician for ear cleaning.

Wipe the casing with a soft dry cloth to clean the body of the thermometer. Never use any abrasive type cleaners or submerge the thermometer in water or any other liquids. Do not expose the thermometer to extreme temperatures, humidity, direct sunlight or shock. Always store your thermometer in a clean, dry place at room temperature. Fingerprints, ear wax or dirt will impede the accuracy of the thermometer.

If mercury is spilled and not cleaned up, it vaporizes. These fumes are poisonous if breathed. Any spilled mercury should be cleaned up immediately to prevent vaporization. Call the GPC for advice on cleaning up spilled mercury.

Check the cabinet temperature by using an accurate hand-held dial or digital thermometer placed next to the thermometer sensing bulb (located in the upper right hand corner of the cabinet). If the dial thermometer on the cabinet grill matches the test thermometer (+/-10F), do not adjust. If temperatures do not match (+/-10F), remove the dial thermometer lens with a small screwdriver. To adjust the temperature needle, insert a small screwdriver in the slotted screw on the needle.
