The program you need is CrossDos. If you don't own an Amiga 4000 or a high density drive then you can only read 720k disks (which hold a maximum of 730,100 bytes). A good friend of us has made an incredible utility, which enables you to read Amiga disk directly on your PC. You can get it straight from AMP's download page. The current release of the KEAOS software does not support this feature directly. However, Kaleidescape customers can burn CDs with the music on their PC and import these CDs into their Kaleidescape System. For best results, first import your CDs directly into your Kaleidescape System. A direct import has higher audio quality and fewer pops and dropouts. When a CD is imported into the Kaleidescape System, it is not compressed and all of the fidelity of the original CD is preserved.

I always designed my own sound tools, but I also use commercial software. Our current sound tool is called "MusyX" and is an editor environment for the complete sound data of a game. For composing and sequencing I use Steinberg Cubase SX & VST and my main sample editor is Wavelab.

With the death of Commodore and the future of the Amiga no longer clear, some groups have decided to move partially or fully to the PC. I currently know of two solutions, the AFR package which consists of a small parallel port interface that you have to build yourself and some software, and the Catweasel controller which is available as an ISA card and comes with DOS software that can create disk files. I have a Catweasel here, and it does in fact work.

The Amiga computer is a desktop machine which first appeared in the eighties, produced by Commodore Business Machines. It was, and still is, noted for it's multi-tasking and graphics abilities. Due to mismanagement by Commodore, Amiga production stopped for about three years in the early nineties. The Amiga was continued by Amiga Technologies and is now owned by Gateway2000, in the guise of Amiga International.

Aminet hosts quite a great numbers of sound rippers (Exotic Ripper, Serial Ripper, etc.) that you can use with a real/emulated Amiga. Many of them are but AMP hosts music that were originally used in video games, utilities and presented at some Amiga parties. A big part of the mods you can download were sent to us by the composers and never got released in any Amiga productions.

Yes. There are a number of excellent contemporary composers working within the Sacred Harp style, including one of our own singers here in the Shiloh group. There are beautiful hymns being written in this musical tradition today. These modern compositions still fit within the well-defined and traditional concepts of Sacred Harp music.

But I can't resist a few basic comments. You can do good creative work on either platform. There are differences in the configuration and setup and that may affect your decision. This is a topic that we can, and usually do, discuss in class.
