Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Can we put payload in the wing, such as in a hollow spar?

faq
Answer: For this year payload MAY NOT be carried internal to the wing. That does not prohibit the payload bay extending between the wing panels in the "wing carry over" area, as long as it is entirely inside the fuselage structure. Answer: The 40A limit can be considered as a system wide current limit. No motor or battery may see more than a 40A current. Therefore, if you have two separate packs feeding two separate motors, each motor/pack would have a 40A (max) fuse.

Question: Will the payload be supplied by the team or the contest administration?

faq
Question: If battery power fails can an immediate landing be made without making a complete lap (question paraphrased by editor) Answer: First priority is safety of personnel, followed by minimizing damage to facilities and equipment. If power fails unexpectedly the pilot will setup for as safe an emergency landing as possible. If the plane does not pass the downwind pylon that sortie's payload will not count, but any prior sorties will still be credited toward the overall score.

Question: Is the payload box provided by the competition or may we make our own?

FAQ
Answer: Fairing/Cones may not be added to the box. For the sensor deployment mission only the box may leave the aircraft. The exception is that a lower "hatch" may be released separately and does not need to be replace providing the aircraft is structurally and aerodynamically able to fly the remaining mission without it. Also, to prevent jettisoning half of the fuselage, the "hatch" must be no larger in planform than the box planform plus ?" in length and width.
Related Questions

Question: Is there a specification for the cg location of the payload simulated processor units?

FAQ
Answer: The payload elements must be enclosed except for the sampler tube inlet and outlet as specified in the rules (the entire sampler tube may not be external, only the sections specified in the rules), and at least ? of the softball (also defined in the rules). You may use payload specific fairings provided they are not structural and are such that the aircraft could still fly (possibly with ballast, see #5 above) without either payload being present.
Related Questions

Question: Does the aircraft have to be able to fly without the "payload insert"?

faq
Answer: You won't have to fly the aircraft without any payload (empty) during the competition, but the aircraft must be able to fly without a "payload insert", ie. It can't be a required part of the aircraft structure.
Related Questions

Question: Does the payload have to be a "perfect" box or can it have rounded or chamfered corners?

FAQ
Answer: The payload deployment MUST be controlled by the RC Tx/Rx system. No physical "intervention" is allowed. Question: Can the antenna and mount for the Decoy mission (A) be left installed on the aircraft when flying the other missions. Question: Can fairings be applied to the fuselage that "in effect" fair the antenna if they remain at least the specified 3" away. Answer: No.
Related Questions

Question: Are wing pods for carrying the cargo permitted?

FAQ
Answer: External pods (wing or fuselage mounted) may NOT be used for carrying the payload. (rev 22Oct02) Answer: There may not be any "holes" through the payload box for mounting. You may have external "tabs" for mounting, or may make brackets that surround and secure the payload.

Question: Is a flying wing considered to have a fuselage?

AIAA Student Aircraft Design/Fly Competition
Answer: It has a fuselage if any body portion extends beyond the "natural" planform of the wing. That includes a "squashed" cross-section nacelle or boom if the resulting section through it is not an "airfoil", and if there is a clear chord length "jump" to the body region.

When do we get to free spar?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the University of Conn...
Basic sparring is emphasized during the first year or so of practice. Free sparring becomes more important for advanced students. The main reason for this is that good basic technique is a prerequisite to effective free sparring and too much free sparring tends to create bad habits in basic technique. Beginners occasionally free spar, but typically it is with senior students as partners.

Do you spar?

Columbus Ninjutsu Club - FAQ
Yes, we are one of the very few Ninjutsu schools that do. You will gradually train against added resistance, speed, and strikes until you can comfortably and safely spar. Sparring is essential for timing development and learning how to apply techniques to a resisting opponent. Training without sparring is incomplete training, and can develop a dangerous false sense of confidence. Top

Question: Just how big can a canard or horizontal be before it is considered a wing?

AIAA Student Aircraft Design/Fly Competition
Answer: If there are multiple flying surfaces, and there is no overlap between the surface, the largest area one is considered a wing. If the "other" surfaces have a high-lift system, they will be considered to be a second (or third) wing. Answer: No, the rules are correct as stated. Aircraft must have ALL wheels off the ground by the 100 foot line, and they must remain off until the landing. Their is no "obstacle" height requirement for this year.

Question: What is 'Wing Incidence' and 'Wing Decalage' ?

Model Airplane FAQ
Imagine a line down the middle of the fuselage - this is called the water line (because planes usedto be made by shipwrights - you live and learn) Put the wing at an angle of about + 2.5 degrees to this; this is the riggers angle, also called angle of incidence. When the wind flows across the wing, relative to the chord line (a line across the centre of the wing from leading edge to trailing edge) it defines the angle of attack.

No. Sparring in F.I.S.T. is entirely optional. You get a great workout just pounding the heavy bag and pads. For those who want to spar though we have both non contact and full contact towards the end of phase II of the training and continuing from there.

Still Sparring (no gear)- Tai Chi style slow movement to develop sensitivity, coordination and control. For beginners and higher. Light Touch Sparring (no gear)- Very light touch sparring similar to Still Sparring but using a little more speed and timing to develop entering, trapping, and grappling concepts. Contact is very minimal as strikes are concerned, very light contact touches, but moves into take downs, joint locking, and light grappling for beginners and higher.

Many reasons. To develop distancing skills, timing skills, adapt to changing conditions, to overcome pain, to overcome fear of contact, to practice at full speed with a non-cooperating partner, to experience at least part of the adrenalin rush that comes about, etc. Competitive sparring aids in building good character traits such as sportmanship, goal setting and achieving, self-control, perseverence, and self-confidence.

Yes, although to start with this is light and slow, moving up to full contact for advance practitioners. Sparring is in no way fighting. Sparring is an important aid to training, teaching timing, distance and randomisation more effectively than any other training method. Students who afree to spar are carefully supervised, and are advised on the compulsory and recommended padding and equipment.

Question: What is the 'chord' of a wing?

Model Airplane FAQ
The chord is the distance between the front of the wing (the leading edge) and the back (the trailing edge). measured on a line parallel to the fuselage..... and obviously a chord is not a constant, it's just a value for a given point on the wing. Root cord and tip chord can be quite different...

Each point also accesses the energy of one of the two points next to it on the diagram. For example, a Seven may have a Six Wing or an Eight Wing. While they will still have primarily Seven views and behaviors, their personality will be flavored by Six or Eight and they will look quite different. Most people have one Wing point that is dominant, although at some time in their life, they access the energy from the other wing point.

The Wing-Over is a competition maneuver in glider aerobatics. You pull up and at the same time bank the plane. When the bank increases past 45 degrees, the nose will start to drop while the bank keeps increasing and the plane keeps turning. Halfway through the maneuver, the plane has turned 90 degrees, the fuselage is level with the horizon and the bank is 90 degrees. The plane is above the original flight path.

Why do the singers sit in a "hollow square"?

Sacred Harp Singing FAQ
Since Sacred Harp singing is a participatory activity, and not a performance, the singers arrange their seating so as to focus the sound inward, toward the center of the group, instead of projecting it outward toward an audience. The greatest volume and optimum balance are heard in the very center of the hollow square, where every singer may take his or her turn as leader.

Do you spar in Jiu Jitsu?

AJJ@MIT FAQ
Yes and no. We practice *practical* self-defense... many of the methods we practice would cause an attacker serious physical harm if it were to be done full-force (bones might break, joints would unjoint, and our attacker would likely loose consciousness or possibly worse). However, we do practice with each other in a way that gets as close to a possible self-defense scenario as possible, without risking permanent injury to one another.
