If the window is a GnomeDialog, this is user-configurable and you should not do it. In most other cases it would be a bit strange; but there are exceptions, such as splash screens. The function you want is gtk_window_set_position(); you can leave the window's position up to the window manager (the default), ask to have it centered, or ask to have it appear wherever the mouse pointer is.

In another of a long line of Design Decisions I Regret, xv tries to do all sorts of clever things with regard to the image window's position on screen. For example, if you issue the Max Size command, xv will position the window so that the window's contents exactly fill the screen (and the titlebar, frame, etc. are off the edges). Prior to GLUT 3.7, you can generate a full-screen window using a call to glutFullScreen(void). With GLUT 3.7 and later, a more flexible interface was added. With glutGameModeString(), an application can specify a desired full-screen width and height, as well as the pixel depth and refresh rate.
