All photography students (starting with the 100 level class) will need an adjustable film camera. For most this is a 35mm single lens reflex camera (or SLR) usually fitted with a normal lens. Many of our students come into the pro- gram with an older camera. As long as the camera has an adjustable focus, adjustable aperture, an adjustable shutter and a working light meter it should work fine.

The good news is, unless you are shooting close-up pictures of jewelry, you don't need an expensive camera to take good product shots. If you are shooting pictures for use on websites and not for print, you can get a good camera for less than $200. The quality of your images is going to depend much less on the sophistication of your camera and much more on your lighting and how well you operate the camera.

Not necessarily. Whiteboard Photo works with scanners, so you can use it for cleaning up scanned documents too. But, if you want to capture your whiteboard, you'll need a digital camera.

Electric current varies throughout the world and can affect your small appliances, such as hair dryers and electric shavers. The voltage in the countries we will visit is 220V. Plugs are either the Continental European type with two round pins or the English type with a square plug. Your appliances may be plugged into a European outlet with an adaptor. Some electric devices like laptops, shavers and camera chargers work both 100V and 220V.

The Shad-o-Box cameras will work with most standard digital frame grabbers. The frame grabber interface consists of 16 data lines, three timing outputs (pixel clock, hor. sync and vertical sync), a strobe input and four control I/O lines. Both RS-422 and LVDS versions of the cameras are available. A custom cable is required for most frame grabbers, although some frame grabbers that use the 68-pin AIA interface may work with just a simple SCSI cable.

The AS program is a concentrated experience. Taking more courses during a term can be stressful and may detract from your ability to apply yourself fully to the educational experience you are receiving. No! Digital cameras are nice, but not necessary. Pictures taken with a good quality camera are fine and can be scanned in with a scanner. If you prefer, many drug stores and other photo processing centers can digitize your picture -- put your pictures on a floppy disk or CDROM -- for a few extra dollars. For easy uploading, make sure they store pictures in the jpeg format.

Please talk to your TA. Your TA will have set up a date when 355 students can begin reserving cameras. On that date, we will confirm that you have filled out a Borrowing Agreement, and you will be asked to review our Equipment Checkout Policy and to take a quiz on the information. You can then reserve equipment for class. The Department's film and video equipment is only available for insturctional use. Only students currently enrolled in production classes may use this equipment.

No. Although digital cameras are convenient, you can scan your film camera negatives or prints and submit the files to Image Showcase. There is no denying the convenience of digital cameras and the turn-around time of the results they produce, but film cameras still have a lot going for them - especially if you have a large collection of images on film and are used to making images this way. The benefits of a film camera is that you can scan the negative to almost whatever digital size you like.

You need some way of getting a JPEG or GIF file (an image file) onto your computer. The image file can be on your desktop, your hard drive, a floppy, ZIP disk, CD, or any other "drive". The file can come from a scanner, digital camera, video camera, a photo CD or disk (from your photo processor), from an email (if you have a friend who can send you your images), or from a website.

This is based on personal preference. The Society, besides organizing photographic outing trips, it also organizes courses, talks, workshops and exhibition to enable the members to widen their knowledge and scope. This very much depends on what you are using your images for. For Internet use you only need low resolution images whereas, when printing a brochure you will need much higher resolution images. We use a 5 million pixel camera which is more than adequate for website images and gives us great great 8" x 10" images.

Many advocate two for the ceremony - one in front and one on back. One will suffice for small and medium sized receptions. Some experts recommend 3+. Your mileage may vary.
