Inside PhotoScore's 'Resources' folder on the hard disk there is a plain text file called 'General MIDI.txt'. It contains a list of MIDI voices (from 1 to 128) followed by comma separated strings of instrument names in quotation marks. Adding a new instrument name to a MIDI voice (or moving one from another voice) causes that voice to be played for that instrument when it is assigned to a staff in PhotoScore.

If Cakewalk doesn't currently have the definition for your instrument, you may have to create the definition yourself. We do offer step by step instructions on how to do so here. You might also consider posting a request for the definition on our General newsgroup, which you can access from our Newsgroups page. First, make sure you are actually changing the MIDI Channel and NOT the Device ID Number. These are two very different things and it is a little confusing by looking at the front panel of the VL70-m. The Device ID Number (not the MIDI channel number) is accessed from Play mode by repeatedly pushing the Left SELECT button in Play mode.) From Play mode, press BOTH PART buttons at the same time. The display will change. Push the left SELECT button two times to get to the Receive Channel parameter.

The database records for the pieces of music generally state which instruments they were written for. You can search on the instrument you are interested in on the search page. Unfortunately we cannot help with appraising the value of collections. If you want your collection evaluated, you should contact a professional appraiser. A rare books or antiques dealer in your area may be able to help or refer you to an appraiser they work with.

The band program currently uses the following instrumentation: Piccolo, Bb Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Mellophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Sousaphone, and Battery Percussion. Many MIDI EVI players are unaware that the instrument has a cool remote control volume feature. This allows you to make overall adjustments to the volume of your synth(s) without having to physically touch your synth rack. Create an arpeggiator (or delay) in the environment. Cable it into the channel strip containing the VSTi. Assign a track to the arpeggiator. Select the track, hit "play" and play your controller/keyboard: voila, arpeggio's. Recording will now record the chords you play and not the arp's. Generally the answer is NO! Care should be taken in choosing the instrument that you want to learn. Students are not allowed to change their instrument once lessons get started unless there is an extenuating circumstance. (Lack of practice does not count.) Scheduling and progress make up a large portion of what can be done during lesson time.

Once you've played a card and you Development Phase ends, you cannot make any changes. A card laid becomes a card played. If it's still your Development Phase, just take the card back and play it or another card somewhere else. If it's after your Development Phase, the card must be discarded. If there's a choice of cards to discard, and a rival developer discovered the problem, that developer decides which card to discard (which might not be the last card you played!).

Unlike modern synthesizers, very few electronic organ voices bear more than a passing resemblance to the instruments indicated on the tabs. They serve more to define a general quality of sound. Flute's usually have the purest sound, most closely akin to the sound of the Hammond tonewheel organs. MIDI (an acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a specification first defined in the early '80s to enable keyboards and computer equipment to "talk" to one another.
