It is a collection of utilities to access DOS disks. These utilities behave mostly like their DOS counterparts, i.e. mdir is like dir, mcopy is like copy, etc. Specifics are in the manpages.

For the Inspiron 3000, 3200, & 7500 the answer is NO, this will not work, as the BIOS must detect which drive is present during initial bootup, and the Operating System gets it's information about which drive is present from the BIOS. You have to shutdown to change drives. Admittedly some people have reported success with Hot Swapping by logging out of Windows and logging back in again. Why that would work is a mystery and it is not a good idea.

Download the dban-1.0.7_i386.exe file to your desktop and double-click it. This program will install DBAN to a floppy disk or USB flash device; it will not wipe the computer on which it is run.

You can use Folder Guard to restrict access to the CD-ROM or floppy drive, but that would not encrypt the files on the CD or floppy disk. It means that if you take the CD or floppy to another computer, without Folder Guard installed on it, the disc or floppy would NOT be protected. If you want to protect the removable drive so that it would be protected even if you remove it from your computer, you need some sort of encryption software to do that. Ark Linux does not support installation from a floppy disk; however, there is some free software available which will allow you to install Ark Linux from CD even if your BIOS does not support booting from CD-ROM. A workaround for those who must have 2 CD-ROMs visible at the same time is to use vvfat. Mount one of the CD-ROMs, and pass it as a hard disk via -hdd fat:/mnt-point. These will look like hard disks to the guest OS, and thus are not removable.

FreeBSD supports any ATAPI-compatible IDE CD-R or CD-RW drive. For FreeBSD versions 4.0 and later, see the manual page for burncd(8). For earlier FreeBSD versions, see the examples in /usr/share/examples/atapi. FreeBSD also supports any SCSI CD-R or CD-RW drives.
