NLS does not produce large-print recreational reading material. Large-print materials are available from many public libraries and bookstores. You may link to our listing of major large-print publishers and other sources, or you may contact us to request a print copy. All catalogs, bibliographies, and bimonthly magazines sent to patrons to help them select books are available in large print as one of several format options. In addition, some network libraries have large-print collections.

Information changes. Even our best books need periodic revision to account for developments in research, changes in thinking, and so forth. By industry standards, New Harbinger books tend to stay in print a very long time. But all good things must come to an end—or, at least to a new edition. When we need to reprint a book, we ask ourselves some hard questions about it.

The decision to put a book out of print is long and complicated because we try very hard to make sure that every book gets as much circulation as possible. Final out-of-print decisions are made by collaborative agreement between several New Harbinger departments.

A few copies of each title are still available, but the books are not being reprinted at this time. It is expensive to print and distribute trade paperback books, and the profit margin is slim (unless many, many copies are sold in a short interval). Also, the internet has made it possible to "publish" without going to paper. In fact the internet provides opportunity to disseminate to a world wide audience at a fraction of the cost of print distribution.

In the case of Children of the Star it was because the Internet and other new technologies have made it economical for small presses to offer books that don't have the huge mass-market appeal major publishers now require. English-language copies of A Song for Arbonne are hard to come by just now, except in Canada, and The Lions of Al-Rassan is hard to obtain in the U.K. Until recently, The Fionavar Tapestry books were hard to come by in the U.S. All of this is not for bad reasons, but because it is standard procedure in the publishing business to let current editions slide out of print before issuing new editions. That's what is happening now. Both ROC in the States, and Simon & Schuster/Earthlight in the U.K.

For out-of-print titles, the author has made arrangements with an on-line bookseller, www.greatsciencefiction.com, who carries signed, bound-galley copies of his first five novels (Scapescope, Memory Blank, Death Tolls, Deep Quarry, and Redshift Rendezvous).
