We’d like to but it is very difficult to do without specimens; verbal descriptions rarely suffice. If the identification is important to you consult your local library, especially a college or university library, for references used to identify the native or horticultural plants of your area. Illustrations, either photos or line drawings, can be most helpful.

We have a special section in the InsectNet.com Forum named What Bug is This? for help on identification. There are many experts there that can help you with the ID. Post a message there. You will get the best results if you have a clear, close up picture of the insect you want to indentify. You must have a Forum account to post messaages or reply to messages. It is unlikely that any staff from Plantlife International will be able to visit the site of a plant to be identified. Firstly, you should use a good identification book, either for basic identification such as Collins Wild Flower Guide, or a more detailed key such as The New Flora of the British Isles, by Clive Stace. The first step is to check that the plant is what you think it is.

Since the World has millions of species of oerganisms, it is not realistic to address identification requests. A local library has adequate books on particular identifications and this means should be the principal source for this type of request.

All the details that could help us identify an insect can't always be given in an oral or written description. For instance, to identify a house fly, we sometimes have to use a microscope to check for hairs in a specific spot on its body. Identifying immature insects, like caterpillars, can also be quite a challenge. The Insectarium's entomologists use identification keys to identify insects. Taxonomy experts can provide more in-depth expertise in some cases.

The web application of the Diseases Database is intended as an 'aide memoir' and World Wide Web springboard for medically qualified health professionals and medical students. It is an offence to release into the wild a bird or animal that is of a kind not normally resident in Great Britain, unless you obtain a licence to do so. This ban extends to many foreign animals that have become established here, such as the grey squirrel, and also to some native species, such as the barn owl. It is also an offence to sell or release to the wild a short list of highly invasive plants.
