If you have your files on an old Mac with a SCSI drive internal or external; and your new Mac does not have a SCSI external connector or use SCSI drives internally, what can you do? I'll discuss many options. My GENERAL advice is as follows. EITHER use some kind of Mac which HAS SCSI to read your drive, and use it to transfer files either by connection or by transfer to another media (floppy, CD, ZIP disk). OR, you add some kind of SCSI hardware to your new Mac to read the drive.

From Ethan's site (http://penguinppc.org/usr/yaboot/), "yaboot is an OpenFirmware based bootloader for newworld machines." You don't have any other option for booting into Linux if you're using one of the NewWorld Macs (i.e., any colored Mac) with MacOS 9.0.4 or higher. BootX, another bootloader from BenH, used to boot those machines, but changes made to the MacOS in 9.0.4 (and possibly the earlier 9.0.x series) broke it completely. It worked in MacOS 9.

One possibility is DMA compatibility. If your memory card is not DMA compatible, then switch 1 on the Apple HS SCSI card should be open (up). Another possibility I guess is a SCSI ID conflict. Most external drives you purchase are formatted for PCs. If you are only going to use it with your Mac then you should reformat the drive by using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". If you are gong to use it with your Mac and a PC then use "MS-DOS file system" format. To format or reformat a drive you will have to erase it. So before you erase the drive, copy your files to another drive.

Apple provides an "erase disk" option on their main menu which will re-initialize some but not all hard drives. Apple also has a "disk test" utility to test formatted disks. DriveCopy was intended for users who are upgrading to a new hard drive or making a backup of a hard drive in their existing system. Because of operating system conflicts that can result from different hardware configurations, DriveCopy was not intended to copy a hard drive that will be used in another system with different hardware configurations.

No software of any sort can truly low-level format today's modern drives. The ability to low-level format hard drives was lost back in the early 1990's when disc surfaces began incorporating factory written "embedded servo data".
