Admissions decisions are based on the the applicant's full spectrum of credentials. This includes standardized test scores, as well as previous academic performance, rigor of previous academic programs and institutions, recommendations, career and volunteer experience, and commitment to one's chosen field. We have found that at the master's level, undergraduate grades are the best predictor of graduate academic success.

Although an applicant’s performance on the GRE is an important criterion for admission, we do not have minimum scores below which we will not admit. We normally tell students they should be in the B+ range to be competitive. The admission process incorporates 1) overall GPA; 2) prerequisite GPA; and 3) GRE score. Each of these areas is weighted equally. Thereby, the applicant could remain in the competitive range if they were low in one area i.e. overall GPA and up in the other two. Historically, applicants with GRE scores below 900 are not competitive.

There are no fixed standards for acceptable scores, and the GRE scores are just one of many factors in the admissions decision, but most successful applicants have verbal and mathematics GRE scores of 550 or higher.

However, if you graduated from college more than 10 years ago and have been working in the strategic communications profession, the Academic Director may waive the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) requirement. For MSCS you need 1200 combined quantative and analytical (Q+100*A+200 for new format exams). This is strictly enforced unless you have significant work experience. For MS Internet Engineering, we expect good performance on the GRE general exam, but we examine all aspects of a person's record including work experience to make an acceptance determination. In some cases, the GRE requirement can be waived for accomplished applicants.

Most of our students have GRE scores near the 90 percentiles, and in general that is what we expect to see among our students. However, we don't preclude people based on low GRE scores. If there is a good explanation and/or we have other reliable data to indicate that it doesn't matter, then we can, (and have), ignored poor scores. For example, there are historical cases with scores under 60 percentile (but not many).

Graduates of accredited high schools with an ACT score of 19 or above on the English and Reading (previously called Social Science) areas and 19 or above on the Mathematics area (SAT verbal of 440 or above; Mathematics score of 470 or above) may be admitted in good standing.

The English Admissions Committee does not have any expectation of particular GRE score ranges, although the scores are certainly expected to corroborate the other pieces of an applicant's file-- unless there is some reason (e.g., English not the first language) to allow for a discrepancy. The admissions committee takes into consideration the verbal and analytic scores, but generally does not worry if math scores are lower.

If you are an international student (and your medium of instruction for your undergraduate studies was NOT in English), you need a minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper based, 213 computer based, or 80 Internet based. This is a University Graduate Studies and Research requirement. Students that submit TOEFL scores lower than the minimum will be denied admission.

First we look at the applications on their individual merit. We look at all of the materials and try to arrive at an accurate portrait of the applicant that includes experience, the breadth of previous coursework and recommendations. We do see scores and GPAs in all ranges. In general, however, competitive GRE scores will be in the 600s for the verbal section, in the 600s for the quantitative section, and 5 or above (on a 6-point scale) for the writing section.
