Why did you use a 6116 memory chip with an AA battery backup?

We chose to go with a 6116 for several reasons. One reason is the 6116 is widely used and will be readily available for many years to come. Using an AA battery backup system shouldn't be compared to the old Ni-cad battery source on original MPU boards. There were several reasons that the old Ni-cad batteries damaged the boards, the main reason being the batteries were left for years on the boards.

How much memory should rdiff-backup use? Is there a memory leak?

rdiff-backup FAQ
The amount of memory rdiff-backup uses should not depend much on the size of directories being processed. Keeping track of hard links may use up memory, so if you have, say, hundreds of thousands of files hard linked together, rdiff-backup may need tens of MB. If rdiff-backup seems to be leaking memory, it is probably because it is using an early version of librsync. librsync 0.9.5 leaks lots of memory. Later versions should not leak and are available from the librsync homepage.

rdiff-backup FAQ
rdiff-backup versions 0.2.x require Python version 2.1 or later, and versions 0.3.x and later require Python version 2.2 or later. If you don't know what version of python you are running, type in "python -V" from the shell. I'm sorry if this is inconvenient, but rdiff-backup uses generators, iterators, nested scoping, and static/class methods extensively, and these were only added in version 2.2.

Question: What does this use for memory backup?

Scanner Frequently Asked Questions - TrunkTracking Scanners
Answer: The PRO-70 does not have an internal battery. The memory backup is an RC circuit and keeps the channel frequencies stored in memory for about 1 hour during a power loss. Answer: We do not recommend that you use the DC adapter for charging because the DC from a vehicle tends to have voltage fluctuations and noise in the signal. When charging, these fluctuations and noise can cause the battery to not take a charge as well and lessens the battery's capacity and effective life span.

What kind of memory can I use on my Mac?

Herb's Mac Stuff FAQ
Mac computers and printers use a variety of memory, which is called "SIMMS" or "DIMMS" or "VRAM". Most of my memory is sold from a Mac Memory Web page. I provide some descriptions there of memory for most of the systems I sell, but not for the printers. For printers you'll probably have to look at Apple's manual or an Apple document. While I try to identify issues and problems when I can, it is up to YOU the customer to determine what memory and how much memory you need.

Why doesn't Apple make the battery easily replaceable? Or use different batteries, like AA?

iPod Battery and iPhone Battery FAQ
Because if they did either, the size of the batteries and/or the access panels and mechanisms required to access the battery would make the unit significantly larger than it is, likely by several millimeters in thickness at a minimum, and would also affect other dimensions, as well as weight. It was an engineering decision to use an integrated battery; if it were not integrated, the unit would not have the small, sleek form factor that makes it so attractive in the first place.

Q : What is the Memory Effect of a NiCd battery? How can I avoid it?

Battery Logic UK - FAQ - NiMH Rechargeable Batteries and Cha...
If a NiCd battery has not been entirely emptied before the next charge, the chemistry of the NiCd battery will start to play tricks with you. Over time it will appear that the battery is no longer holding a charge. This is called the "memory effect". To avoid this, it is best to occasionally discharge NiCd batteries entirely as this will ensure optimum performance and help lengthen the life of the battery. Memory effect does not occur with NiMH Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries.

What is "battery memory" and how do I avoid it?

Battery FAQ
Technically speaking, NiCad batteries do not have a memory effect. However, they do suffer from a voltage depletion or voltage depression phenomenon that most people call memory effect. If a NiCad battery is repeatedly charged after it has only been partially discharged it will develop a lower voltage and a lower capacity. Fortunately, this effect is reversible by conditioning NiCads. Conditioning is simply fully discharging the battery down to approx 1 volt per cell, after charging it.

If my computer uses a standard battery, can it also have a Dallas Semiconductor Clock/CMOS RAM chip?

Dallas Semiconductor Clock/CMOS RAM FAQ
No. Clock/CMOS RAM devices (Dallas Semiconductor, Odin, Benchmarq, Twinhead, et al) use tiny Lithium batteries that are encased in the device. If your system uses a Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) battery soldered to the board, a coin cell (soldered or in a cup socket) or a wire harness battery it won't use one of these devices. Clock/CMOS RAM devices with onboard power CANNOT be added to systems with board mounted clock and CMOS powered by one of the above types of batteries.
