You have the unit in closed caption text mode. If you turn off this mode, the black box should disappear.

Make sure the physical jack used for the connection is the same as the one selected on the Video Control panel. Composite selects the RCA jack, S-Video selects the 4-pin mini-DIN, and MXC selects the multimedia extension connector.

If your unit is using an S-Video connection, try replacing the cable. Often, a broken pin in the connector can cause this problem. If your unit isn't using an S-Video connection, press and hold down the power button on the front of the machine until you see the words "Please Wait a Few Moments".

This is due to rivafb being compiled into your kernel. The nvidia driver is not compatible with rivafb. You'll need to recompile your kernel without rivafb. The rivafb option can be found in the Console Drivers -> Frame Buffer Support section of the kernel config. Alternatively, if you can just pass the kernel the option video=rivafb:off, you won't need to recompile your kernel. Add the following line to /etc/lilo.conf, then run /sbin/lilo as root: append="video=rivafb:off"

Your dish may have been knocked off position by a storm. You may be able to adjust your dish yourself, "manually." First, call your in-house technician, in case you aren't successful. Then read "Receiver/Dish Adjustment Instructions" for moving your dish. If yours isn't one of the listed brands and you've lost your instruction booklet, we suggest that you take some clues from these instructions and/or look on your manufacturer's website for instructions.

The DVD player has the capability to view movies in three formats: wide screen, LB-letter box (black belts) or PS-Pan Scan. Depending on the DVD movie you have, you may or may not be able to modify the settings. Not all DVD movies allow you to change the settings to all three viewing modes. The majority of movies are manufactured in letter box (black belts) view and will not allow you to alter the viewing settings. Again, it depends on the DVD software and not the DVD player.

Your menu options may not be correct. Check menu options in the setup menu. Make sure the input selections in the menu match what is connected on the back of the Showstopper. The Closed Caption function is set in the â??textâ?? mode. To remove it, access Closed Caption in the Main Menu and change the Mode setting from â??textâ?? to â??offâ??.
