You'll be a member of a family, sharing the joys and the responsibilities of family life. You should want to develop a friendship, exchange ideas, and give as well as receive. It's up to you to adapt to your host family's way of life, rather than the other way round, so the more you try to learn about their customs, diet, and habits, the more rewarding the experience will be for you and for your hosts.

Family is a cornerstone of our treatment. We take a collateral developmental family history from the families. We stay in communication with families and include families in weekly therapy sessions. Families are invited out for family time during your stay. We will work with you to overcome resistance to confidentiality concerns. For your host mother and host father, "Otoosan" (father) and "Okaasan" (mother) are perfectly acceptable. However, if you are close to them in age, or feel otherwise uncomfortable calling them father and mother, using their family name is fine too, for example "Nishihara-san". If they then ask you to call them by their given names, you can start doing so, but it is best to wait to be asked first.

Most visits take place at weekends. A full weekend would typically be Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, or for 3 or 4 days at Christmas. A day visit could be for 4-6 hours depending on how long it takes the student to travel to your home. (Remember a day visit is with a student who is studying fairly close to where you live.) When possible, hosts meet their guests at the nearest rail or bus station, and return them there at the end of the visit.

If you are selected for a frisk search a security screening officer will explain that you have been randomly selected and will ask your permission to conduct the search. Food products from your home country or area are always appreciated, especially semi-sweet items. Japanese people often have less of a taste for very sweet foods than people in other countries, so these should be avoided. Alcohol is also a gamble, as some people do not drink. It can be a good idea to contact your host family before you arrive, and check with them, if you plan to bring something alcoholic.

Our school is located in the very center of a major city, which while being convenient for most things, means that there are not many families living close by with a spare room. So, there are few to no host families within walking distance of the school itself. However, Japan has a great public transport system, of buses, subways, and trains, so it is quite easy to get from most accommodation to the school.
