There are several reasons. First, Anatolians are large breed dogs that carry a wide frame, with males capable of weighing over 150 pounds. This renders them genetically compatible with OEMs. Second, Anatolians live unusually long lives for a large breed dog, routinely living 10+ years. Third, Anatolians have a tighter mouth than OEMs, which results in AMs having a tighter mouth as well, lessening the amount of drool.

The Anatolian Shepherd originated from the region of Turkey, and is a large working dog used primarily as a livestock guardian. This ancient breed was bred to be a hardy survivor in the harsh climate and terrain of Turkey, and has a half-long or a shorter coat that is dense, double, and ideal for most climates.

The Anatolian is a slow maturing breed and the newly acquired puppy is not an instant livestock defender. Anatolians can adapt to just about any type of weather, from the high temperatures of summer to the lows of winter. They can stay outdoors during most climatic conditions, with a good dog house for protection from the elements, and plenty of water in all seasons. It is a good idea to have extra shade for the dog to lie in during the hotter days of summer. During those hot summer days, Anatolians will frequently dig cavernous holes, rather than use a doghouse.

This is not the breed for everyone, and should not become 'the breed of the month', as has happened to some breeds. This breed is, first and foremost, a guarding dog, with strong independence and dominance drives, and it requires a responsible approach to successful management. Time and effort is required to keep Anatolians socialized and well-behaved. They are very strong and can be very stubborn at times.

We've tried to gear this F.A.Q. towards the breed browser and the first time Mastiff wanna-be owner. Here we've tried to show both the upside and the downside of the Mastiff / human relationship.

After you have chosen your breeder and your puppy's sire and dam, you're ready to choose your Mastiff puppy. But which one? The most important aspect of this choice is temperament. Puppies' temperament's vary even within the same litter. Many people will choose the first puppy that runs up to them and pulls at their pant leg because they think this must be a more outgoing puppy. Not every Mastiff is for every family and this puppy may not necessarily be THE puppy for your family.

you know, the standard of the Spanish Mastiff establishes the minimum size but not the maximum one. As far as I am concerned I am a lover of the big dog. Of course the size has to go along with the functionality: a dog 75 cm to withers and 75 kg heavy is better than a dog of 100 kg but not functional.

Of course people keen on the Molossian dogs, who are fascinated by this huge dog, by the very sweet look, or people who is looking for a guard dog, but that is at the same time an excellent family dog. Hence people who desire a mastiff that does not save "surprises" as for being aggressive and not manageable, which are definitely not characteristics of the Spanish Mastiff.

mentioned before, according to our taste the ideal Spanish Mastiff should be of maximum size, of course with excellent relations between size-movement-character. Our efforts are directed towards the completion of this aim. Of course it is not always easy and, as we say, not everything turns out as it should, but the present results encourage and stimulate us to get on. This requires a careful selection of the subjects more for the type and genotypic analysis of the subjects and their ancestors.
