Hearing loss does not affect all frequencies or pitches equally in most cases. The vowel sounds of speech (a, e, i, o, u) are louder and lower-pitched, and are therefore easier to hear. The consonant sounds such as "th" or "s" or "f" or "k", etc. are higher-pitched and softer, making them harder to hear.
