Initial interface to ATA was a parallel interface called Parallel ATA or PATA. Serial ATA or SATA is an evolution of the PATA and is a serial link -- a single cable with a minimum of four wires creates a point-to-point connection between devices. Transfer rates for Serial ATA begin at 150MBps. Future rates have been planned for up to 600MBps.
