I don't even know myself. I was doing some work in that area on another project and the API seemed to be nice and clean that it was fairly straight forward to do. It could have been done as a COM object, but each call needs to be marshaled/unmarshaled with RPC and there is a performance hit. The API is wrapped up, so in the end doesn't really matter.
