Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do about a tobacco that's too dry?

G. L. Pease - Frequently Asked Questions
My method is to put the tobacco in a large, clean bowl, and cover the bowl with a damp towel. The towel should not touch the tobacco. Check the tobacco every couple hours, and when it reaches the moisture level you like, store it in an airtight container. Glass "bail top" jars work well, but be sure to clean them thoroughly. (See the next item on mold.) Different tobaccos take up moisture at different rates.

Is dry eye affected by dust, pollen, or tobacco smoke?

Dry Eye, Dry Eye Treatment, Blepharitis, Sjogren's Syndrome,...
When tear production decreases, dust and pollen stay in the eye longer and are more likely to stimulate an allergic response. In addition, anything that makes an eye more irritated, including dry eye, will make an eye more sensitive to environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke.

My tobacco is too dry. Is it stale?

D&R Tobacco - FAQ's
Sitting on a store shelf or being transported across the country can cause any tobacco to dry out. That may not necessarily be a problem. The biggest problem to RYO/MYO is when tobacco is moist and gets moldy. Mold is the greatest enemy because it spoils the tobacco; dry tobacco can be recovered. The best cigarette tobaccos are actually aged in a tobacco warehouse for a minimum three years before they are ready for rehydration, blending and cutting.

What is Dry Mouth?

Fresh Breath Clinic | Bad Breath + Halitosis Treatment | Tor...
Oral dryness can be the result of insufficient production of saliva. More often, we find that the dry and pasty feeling described by our clients is a response of the tongue and tissues of the mouth to an increased VSC production. Once the oral bacteria are reduced and their by-products eliminated, the sensation disappears and there is no longer a complaint of oral dryness.

The most common symptom of dry AMD is slightly blurred vision. You may have difficulty recognizing faces. You may need more light for reading and other tasks.

How Should I Select My First Tobacco?

Alt Smokers Pipes FAQ
This question lends itself to the short answer given in section 2.1 above. If you have had experience with only cigarettes and cigars, you're in for a real treat. The variety of pipe tobaccos is positively staggering, and the flavor of a blend is influenced not only by its component tobaccos, but also by myriad other factors such as the style of cut and the pipe used to smoke it.

How Should I Store My Tobacco?

Alt Smokers Pipes FAQ
The moisture content of a tobacco affects the way it smokes and tastes; a tobacco that is too moist or too dry will not offer a pleasing smoke. One way to determine if your tobacco has the proper level of moisture is the "pinch test." Take a pinch of your tobacco and squeeze it tightly for a couple of seconds, then release it. If it immediately starts to "unravel," your tobacco is in good shape. If it stays in a tight clump, it is too wet. If it crumbles, it is too dry.

DAODAS FAQs
Tobacco contains thousands of chemicals and byproducts that can make it harmful. The three most dangerous byproducts of tobacco are nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide. Nicotine is the pharmacologically active agent in tobacco that acts on the brain primarily as a stimulant, but which also has sedative effects. How is tobacco cured?

Cigar FAQ
Curing tobacco is a sensitive process that depends on techniques and traditions that are hundreds of years old. Following the harvest, tobacco is removed from the fields and placed in large bulk piles within a curing shed. This shed will have several barn doors in the front and rear, and many doorways running along the sides. There are also vents on the upper portions of the structure. The purpose of all these openings is to control the interior temperature and humidity.

What is the Tobacco Beetle?

Cigar FAQ
The dreaded beetle is a tiny little bug that will infest tobacco. You may see the beetle, about the size of a large grain of sand, crawling around your precious stogies. Often, though, you may not see the actual beetle, as it can crawl within any one of your smokes and hide undetected. However, there are two telltale signs that you have been infested. The first, is that you will notice that small holes have been bored through the cigars.

How many bowls does it take to understand a tobacco?

G. L. Pease - Frequently Asked Questions
It takes time to really get to know a blend. The first bowl will only give you a glimpse of what the blend has to offer. With continued smoking, you'll begin to discern some of the more subtle characteristics, the nuances of the blend. These nuances are often the things that make the difference between a good tobacco, and a truly great one. Of course, if you hate it upon first light, it's not likely you'll ever grow to love it, unless your tastes change - and that DOES happen.

Are you supported by the tobacco industry?

FORCES International - Frequently Asked Questions
No. But we certainly would not consider it immoral to be supported by the tobacco industry. We take advertisement from all industries (except from the antismoking industry - see our policy) on condition that there is no expectation to change our political positions. Our opposition, while being lavishly financed by the pharmaceutical industry, does not hesitate to call any adversary "a stooge of the tobacco industry" - regardless of whether that is true or not.
Related Questions

Do you support the tobacco industry?

FORCES International - Frequently Asked Questions
That depends on what the tobacco industry does. We certainly support the right of the tobacco industry (and any other industry) to freely promote and advertise its products, which are absolutely legal and certainly no more "dangerous" than many other products which are allowed to be advertised.

Do you support tobacco education in schools?

FORCES International - Frequently Asked Questions
If we choose to educate about potentially dangerous substances and behaviours, then education should not be limited to tobacco. There are immensely more dangerous substances and behaviours to educate children about. If we choose to educate children against all possibly dangerous substances and behaviours, that kind of education would be at the expense of conventional education, already severely lacking in substance.

How do I find out if my well will go dry?

The Hydrology of Drought - USGS Water Resources of Maryland,...
Wells screened in unconfined water table aquifers are more directly influenced by the lack of rain than those screened in deeper confined aquifers. This means that it may be more likely for the water level in wells screened in the water table to drop below the pump level and prevent water from being obtained. This does not mean that wells in a confined aquifer will not go dry, as they are also influenced by pumping rates and lack of recharge.

What should you do if you find out that your teen is using alcohol, tobacco, or drugs?

Teen Alcohol and Drug Abuse - Topic Overview - MSN Health &a...
If your teen is using alcohol, tobacco, or drugs, take it seriously. One of the most important things you can do is to talk openly with your teen about the problem. Urge him or her to do the same. Try not to use harsh, judging words. Be as supportive as you can during this time. In most cases, a hostile, angry face-to-face meeting pushes your teen away from the family. The type of treatment your teen needs depends on the level of substance abuse.

What is preemption? Does it have any effect on minors' access to tobacco?

SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention
Preemption is an issue that refers to State tobacco control laws that include a clause barring, or pre-empting, its localities from enacting tobacco control ordinances that are stricter than the State's. preemption is often presented as a State's rights issue, but the implication for youth tobacco access is that such a statute then renders illegal any policy that individual counties and communities may wish to enact, or have already enacted, to support the health of their youth.
