Actually when we started out riding, it was on mountain bikes, on trails and unpaved roads. Then we started to wander onto the public roads a little. Then we tried slick tires, and life hasn't been the same since.

The clearest difference is emphasized by two alternative names for mountain biking: Off-road biking or trail biking. It involves getting onto unpaved roads, trails, and terrain. Beyond that, other differences frequently, but don't always, exist. Mountain biking often involves hillier terrain than road biking, but it doesn't have to. You can go road biking on a mountain bike (though it will take more effort); you'll soon get in trouble, though, if you try serious mountain biking on a road bike.

Yes, each trail has designated user groups that are identified on our trail list and at the trail-head. Look for the symbol that represents the use you are interested in. For all terrain vehicles, currently there are no trails that are specifically identified for that use. All terrain vehicles can only be operated on dirt or gravel Forest Service roads and may be prohibited in some areas. Call a local Forest Service office for more information.

One of the favorites is the 11.6-mile trail around Rampart Reservoir. But, you'll want to do some exploring to determine which trail may be a favorite for you. We have trails of every level of difficulty from easy to extreme. You will find a good variety of guidebooks on the subject at your favorite bookstore or even at a public library.

Absolutely. Part of mountain biking is the skill and judgment to maneuver on off-road trails. But part of it is simply strength and stamina. The more you have, the longer and better you'll bike. You'll develop these faster from an intense session of road biking, than from time on a mountain bike.

If you've signed up for a mountain biking tour, but your traveling partner would prefer to road ride, no problem, we can accommodate you both! Our mountain biking tours labeled with the "Road Option" provides an opportunity for a biker to ride roads which are in the vicinity of our mountain bike trails. With the "Road Option", you will receive a detailed itinerary where you be able to meet up with the rest of the mountain bike group at different points during the day.

We have great back roads for roadies! To name a few....Icicle Road climbs stoutly into Icicle Canyon with surprisingly little traffic. The East Leavenworth Rd./Icicle Rd. Loop is an easy nine miles, very flat. Heading down through the valley on the back roads is a treat, especially at harvest and spring blossom time. The inn has a complimentary collection of Specialized Mountain Bikes suitable for road riding, with helmets and locks included. We also have a Cannondale Tandem.

The simple answer is: none, provided you are comfortable riding a bike. It might be good to hop on a bike and ride a few times before coming down to get your bike muscles tuned up. The basic trails are designed with the novice in mind. This is not to say they are boring. As the basic trails are wide, we've left naturally occurring obstacles in place provided they were not inherently hazardous with no trail value to the rider.

The United Ways serving Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties began meeting in 1999 to discuss the establishment of a regional 2-1-1 call service in the Hudson Valley. A feasibility study was conducted and initial funding for the planning phase was provided by several of the United Ways. In 2002, the Dyson Foundation provided $221,000 as a challenge grant – matching every $3 raised by the regional United Way effort with $1.

The mountain biking will be done on gravel, paved roads, and moderate cross-country trails. There are no drops, stunts or advanced trails. There are some hills to climb and some areas where participants may feel more comfortable walking their bikes (i.e., down stairs, up steep sections, etc.)

There are a number of mountain bike tracks within an easy ride of the campsite. The Forestry Commission forests at Beddgelert and at Coed-y-Brenin near Capel Curig have mountain bike routes, and the tracks up and down Snowdon can be cycled with some restrictions. The Snowdon bridleway is now governed by voluntary cycling restrictions that mean you cannot cycle to or from the summit between 10am and 5pm between 1st Mat and 30th September.

We have off road routes suited to all abilities, however we expect all riders to have had some recent experience. For harder routes we only allow riders bringing their own bikes.

You can mountain bike on most cross-country ski trails, on Forest Service roads, abandoned (grown over) logging roads and railroad beds, and most snowmobile trails. Biking on the Gunflint Trail itself is not specifically prohibited, but it is dangerous and not recommended, due to the large vehicles (large trucks and the occasional RV and trailer) on the road and the fact that people are not used to seeing bikers on the Trail.

The Mountain Biking DVD covers a wide range of beginner to intermediate skills, with a number of trials skills. Great for cross country riders and freeriders. The Freeride Fundamentals DVD is geared more towards freeriding skills for dual suspension bikes. There is also a thorough section on fundamental elements which is great for all levels of riders.

Our Road Trips & Adventures are designed for the intermediate to advanced mountain bike riders. You will be required to complete a questionnaire to determine your riding ability. Most trails that we ride have several stunts located throughout. They range from ladder bridges (sometimes skinny), natural and man-made drops, gap jumps, big air jumps, steeps and technical rooty terrain. We try to maintain an average riding level throughout the group to maximize the amount of runs per day.

No. Much of the journey across Spain and Morocco is well surfaced with high quality asphalt ad excellently surfaced. The road in Mauritania could be brand new by the time we get there, but presently it is well surfaced for the most part and pot-holed further south. Ride carefully around the broken sections and you’ll be fine. There is more piste in Mali and some softer sandy sections on the way to Timbuktu.
