Wind Wonders sculptures can be cleaned with a reputable copper cleaner. If you want to protect it from the elements, a clear spray lacquer can be applied. IT IS CRITICAL that the sculpture be clean and dry when applying the lacquer. You MUST follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for application and drying time before putting your sculpture outside. You can also use car wax on the sculptures.

Most of my sculpture is done with an oxygen-acetalyne gas welding torch and steel. Electrical arc welding is used occasionally for thicker pieces of steel. Some of my found object sculptures incorporate other nonmetal materials, which are attached in new ways. The welded steel sculptures are created by using 3 foot mild steel rods, usually 3/32" diameter.

We put a chemical on the copper to speed up the aging process. What usually would happen in the aging process is that the copper would first turn to a dark brown upon oxidation (due to the natural elements). The next step would be that the copper would turn to a copper sulfate, which is the verdigris green color. This would naturally take 5-10 years.

The tarnish is normal. It is the oxidization of the copper after contact with oxygen combined with other natural factors. The tarnish or darkening is harmless, but will in time diminish its electrical connectivity. You can remove it by scrubbing the pipes with extra fine steel wool. You can polish them to their original shine in a matter of minutes.

A semi-gloss appearance can be achieved by applying enough Pro-Tek-Tor to fill up to the surface of the wood. Apply a mixture of 50% water and 50% clear Pro-Tek-Tor to the stain and rub vigorously with a Teflon scrub pad. Pro-Tek-Tor will reactivate itself and the pigments will begin to move.
