Can I zoom while the shutter is pressed?

Digital Photography FAQ
This is a neat trick that can give some strange motion-blur like effects. Unfortunately, it's not possible on most digital cameras. Obviously, you can do if your camera has a manual zoom ring. If you know of a cameras with an unexpected ability to do this, please let me know and I'll mention it here.

Why can't I release the shutter right after changing the zoom setting in the TELE direction?

PLAZA
After you zoom is adjusted in the TELE direction, the zoom lens moves and then AF is performed. All controls, except for the zoom button, are disabled while AF is being performed. If you need to record immediately after performing a zoom operation, select manual focus (MF), focus for maximum zoom, and then zoom to level you want. Note that manual focus at the maximum wide-angle setting allows a narrower focusing range than TELE, so you should focus at the maximum TELE setting here.

Check your manual to see if your camera has this feature. Shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter allows light onto the CCD. The shutter speed is measured in seconds (or fractions of a second for most common pictures). The slower the shutter speed, the more motion is recorded by the camera. A tripod might be needed to use slower shutter speeds without blurring the picture.

What is a shutter lag?

Adesso --> Home
Almost all consumer-level digital cameras suffer from a rather long (about 1 second) delay before the picture is taken after the shutter button is pressed. This is a big problem when taking shots of fast-moving subjects, for example in sports. On many cameras this delay can be reduced by half-pressing the button before the shot to focus the camera on the subject.

What about zoom binoculars?

Astronomy Binoculars - Frequently Asked Questions
You will probably notice that Garrett Optical does not carry any zoom binoculars - this is because we consider zoom binoculars to be inferior in virtually every area of performance to fixed-magnification binoculars. The design of zoom binoculars causes them to have an extremely narrow field of view, even at low magnifications, creating a "tunnel vision" effect. Also, the zoom mechanism itself is quite fragile, and once it is broken the binoculars are useless.

If the subject is complex or the camera is moving, it may cause the camera to take more time selecting which AF frame to use. The camera will respond more rapidly if only one AF frame is selected ? the center AF frame, for example.
