Yes. It is possible for your network connection to be deactivated or restricted for other reasons as well. In general these can be categorized as incidents of unauthorized usage or policy violations, causing problems for the network, non-payment for service, or legal issues. Unauthorized usage and policy violations include any use of the network which is in violation of Cornell or CIT policies (see the Computing at Cornell Policies page for more information).

The Link LED (green LED) of the camera remains lit as long as it has a working Ethernet connection to a network device or computer.

Intermittent connectivity can be the sign of a faulty internet connection, limitations imposed by your ISP, or errors caused by any hardware/software applications connected with your internet connection, such as driver incompatibilities, old hardware, a slow/overloaded ISP or many other possibilities. Also, if you get disconnected from the Gnutella network, it will have no impact on your downloads already in progress.

Yes, if circumstances warrant. If your computer is infected with a virus or worm which is spreading through the network (often by sending out forged e-mails from your computer with copies of the virus, although this is only one way), especially if it is causing problems with the Cornell wide area network (WAN), CIT may deactivate your network connection or restrict the level of network access available until the virus has been removed from your computer.

Applets are not allowed to open network connections to any computer, except for the host that provided the .class files. This is either the host where the html page came from, or the host specified in the codebase parameter in the applet tag, with codebase taking precendence. For example, if you try to do this from an applet that did not originate from the machine foo.com, it will fail with a security exception: Socket s = new Socket("foo.com", 25, true);

Be sure to name the originating host exactly as it was specified when the applet was loaded into the browser. That is, if you load an HTML page using the URL http://foo.state.edu/~me/appletPage.html then your applet will be able to connect to its host only by using the name foo.state.edu. Using the IP address for foo.state.edu won't work, and using a "shorthand" form of the host name, like foo.state instead of foo.state.edu, won't work.

The fee increase in September 2004 was the first step in this cost restructuring. Answer: Restrictions in the residence halls have been implemented because the enormous bandwidth consumption, caused by the popularity of music and video sharing. The demand for bandwidth has grown exponentially, so much that it can make it impossible to get e-mail or do academic work over the network. Implementing the download restrictions has reduced the residence hall demand and restored the connection speed to a more reasonable level.

Networks are not able to give a specific reason for this refusal because of the Data Protection Act. The networks normally use a credit scoring system to decide if an applicant can be accepted. The information for the score is taken from one of two databases (Equifax or Experian). If it's not accurate, you can get it changed.

You might be able to, but each time a credit check is made against you, it can reduce your credit score. If you do not know why you were declined the first time, you should make sure all the information held about you on the credit databases is correct. The WestConn wireless network is part of a DMZ network. Wireless users will only be able to access items on the University network similar to when they connect to the internet from home. Some services that are known to have security issues have been blocked. Please note that wireless service is not intended to replace the University wired network.

All computers in your home network should be protected by a firewall. A firewall helps to prevent the spread of viruses or worms across your network if they infect one computer. A computer on the network could also become infected through a separate Internet connection, such as a laptop that is used on your home network and on public networks. Or, a virus could be introduced to a computer on your network through software installed from a CD or floppy disk.

Network connection speed at your server is one of the biggest factors affecting your performance. If your server is connected via an ISDN line it will likely perform worse than a comparable server connected via T1 line.

Open the settings window, go to the Connection tab and activate the "Selected" combo box. Ensure you "Save and Close" after doing this since the settings aren't saved until the settings window is closed.
