A majority a patients experience relief of their symptoms after a few weeks and can avoid surgery. However, when the spinal cord is severely compressed, the pressure on the nerves may cause irreversible damage. I sometimes use the analogy of a heavy brick placed on top of a garden hose causing it to be compressed.
