We all do! We all benefit from the additional energy and from the conservation of such important public resources as wildlife, rare plants, clean air, and outstanding scenery.

All energy development proposals on the Public Lands undergo extensive environmental reviews prior to approval. When energy companies propose in their drilling permit applications to drill in an environmentally sound manner using BMPs, the government and public environmental review process is much easier, and goes more quickly. BLM encourages all energy companies to develop and add BMPs into all of their drilling proposals.

This website contains a range of BMPs to consider. Each must be tailored to meet the needs of the specific drilling site and development proposal.

While some BMPs add to the cost of producing oil and natural gas, other BMPs will actually save the energy company money. BLM considers cost, but as public land managers, we must also look at the value of the natural resources we are protecting when choosing the appropriate BMP.

Landfill gas recovery projects provide a highly effective means of reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, whether the landfill gas is combusted by flare, electricity generation equipment, or another end use system. By using the otherwise wasted methane contained in the collected landfill gas to generate electricity or directly as a fuel, fossil fuels such as oil and coal are displaced.

Inclusion in the Projects Exchange does not guarantee funding. However, many projects have met with success because they were listed. Frequently, projects listed in the Projects Exchange go on to receive grants from The Rotary Foundation.

In the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, many coal bed natural gas wells are drilled with the smaller water well drilling rigs, identical to what a homeowner would hire to drill a water well for its home. A very small well pad is cleared for the drilling rig, and many times a road is never constructed. The Energy Company drives in on top of the vegetation, leaving only two small, parallel wheel ruts.

There are two ways to determine which BMPs apply to you: by activity and by area. The SLAC BMPs are categorized by activity and can be found on the web at the stormwater page. In addition, each industrial activity area identified in Table B of the SLAC stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) has specific BMPs associated with it. The ES&H Water Programs manager is always available to help if there are questions.

BMPs (Best Management Practices) are practices developed by the EPA. They are used to implement minimum control measures aimed at reducing stormwater pollution. BMPs can be structural such as site silt fences or filtering systems or they can be non-structural such as educational programs and public service announcements.

Landfill gas energy projects involve collecting and combusting landfill gas. The process of combustion destroys organic compounds, including methane and NMOC. During combustion, these organic compounds chemically react with oxygen in the presence of heat, breaking apart to form water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other less volatile compounds.

Local opposition to proposed wind farms usually arises because some people perceive that the development will spoil the view that they are used to. It is true that a large wind farm can be a significant change, but while some people express concern about the effect wind turbines have on the beauty of our landscape, others see them as elegant and beautiful, or symbols of a better, less polluted future.

The only existing 'renewable energy project' on Islay is the Wavegen wavepower turbine at Claddach near Portnahaven on Islay's Atlantic coast. Unfortunately, there is no visitor facility and precious little to see on a casual visit. The unit is remotely administered from Inverness and more information can be had from Wavegen direct. Although there was an abortive attempt to install windpower near Bowmore a few years ago, discussions are supposedly still going on but no news so far.

A reflective roof can reduce peak cooling demand by 10-15%.

Reduced fuel consumption will displace fossil fuels, lower energy bills and cushion against increasing energy prices. An optional backup power system can keep the lights on if the utility power fails. Adding a solar power system will also add value to your home.

Renewable Energy Sources are clean and inexhaustible. The money spent on renewable energy installations tends to remain in the community, creating jobs and fuelling local economies. The use of renewable energy equipment also reduces our dependence on foreign and/or centralized sources of energy, and is an important strategy in the process of creating a truly secure and sustainable energy future.

Every kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by a renewable energy system displaces the same amount of electricity produced by conventional power generation stations that are using fossil fuels that contribute to CO2, SO2, NOx and smog. Clean renewable energy production reduces suspended particulates we usually call smog, which are a significant health problem on the same hot sunny days when (for example) a solar energy system can produce electricity at its peak level.

First, it's clean. The energy can be extracted without burning a fossil fuel such as coal, gas, or oil. Geothermal fields produce only about one-sixth of the carbon dioxide that a relatively clean natural-gas-fueled power plant produces, and very little if any, of the nitrous oxide or sulfur-bearing gases. Binary plants, which are closed cycle operations, release essentially no emissions. Geothermal energy is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A wind energy system can provide a cushion against electric power price increases. Wind energy systems help reduce U.S. dependence on fossil fuels; and they are nonpolluting. If you live in a remote location, a small wind energy system could help you avoid the high costs of having utility power lines extended to your site.
