Black-oil sunflower seed is the most universally eaten seed at bird feeders. But there are many other seeds and foods to offer to birds. Different types of birds eat different types of birdseed. Birds with big, strong bills can crack the shells of large seeds, like striped or black oil sunflower. Birds with smaller bills eat smaller seeds, like milo or safflower seed. The American Goldfinch, our state bird, eats tiny seeds called Niger (or thistle) seed. Mixed seed in a feeder can attract a variety of different birds, from Northern Cardinals, to the beautiful gray Tufted Titmouse, to the chattery little Carolina Chickadee.

Granted seed moths are annoying little pests, but they are far from dangerous. Just put the bag of bird seed in your garage or refrigerator. The cold will keep them from hatching. If they are in the garage, well at least they aren't inside the house. Use traps to catch the ones flying in your home. I suggest you do a trap and kill them tho. If they lay eggs before they die, you'll have a lot more little moths in the months to come.

Adopt six or seven cats. Seriously, though, cover the seed with one quarter inch of topsoil, pat down or roll gently. The faster it sprouts, the more you keep and the less the birds eat. You can also slit an old tennis ball and force it over the end of a six- to seven-foot piece of old garden hose. Draw two mean eyes and a nasty mouth, and place yellow strips of tape like Xs down the hose. Let this lie on the seeded area until the seed sprouts. Why? The birds think it’s a snake.

In St. Louis, we are in the transition zone between ideals for northern and southern grasses. Tall Fescues are best adapted for our area where there are extremes of cold winters and hot summers.

Fall. The temperatures are becoming cooler, rain is usually more frequent and the period before the next hot-dry summer is at its longest.

Generally speaking, the best down comes from larger, more mature birds. When age and maturity are equal, goose down is better than duck down. However, down from an older duck is better than down from a younger goose. Larger Down has an extraordinarily high warmth-to-weight ratio. No, they won't. "Your" birds visit many feeders in your neighborhood, and find food in many locations. It is nice to have someone fill your feeders when you are on vacation, but if that's not possible, you won't come home to emaciated birds! Even though feeders do help birds get through the long northern Indiana winter, they still find other things to eat and still sample food from others' feeders.

Studies have shown that black oil sunflower is favored by most seed-eating birds, probably because of the higher oil content. But, it's best to let the birds tell you. Put out some of each and see which is preferred by the birds at your feeding station.

Preferred seed zones are identified to help growers select from the best areas but no one area produces the best plant for everyone. It's all really a matter of personal preference & production styles. New growers should note how every field responds and stick with zones that do best in that situation.

Fall is the best time to sow because there is a more developed root system by the time summer drought stress occurs. Spring is the second best time because the temperature and moisture is good for germination.

A blend of fine fescue, bluegrass and certain varieties of perennial rye can tolerate a fairly shady area. However, dense shade may require ground covers or shade type perennial plants. More important is cultural practices such as irrigation and more frequent light applications of fertilizer to make up this loss taken by trees.

Grass seed can be planted in either spring or fall. However, fall is the best time because the ground is warm and there is less weed competition. By far the best time is late August to mid-September. This allows time for the seed to germinate and grow, for the grass to be cut once, and for an application of fertilizer to be applied before the first hard frost.

None, really. That’s not exactly true, but then they haven’t developed an Astroturf seed yet. There is no true shade grass; all grasses like some sun. However, the best of the bunch that can get along with less sun than the rest is Poa trivialis. Kentucky 31 tall fescue, Zoysia, Japonica, Zoysia matrella, Astoria bent, Highland and Penncross bents, as well as creeping red, Illahee, and Chew-lugs fescue, all will tolerate light shade.

Buy scratch grains to put on the ground, black sunflowers for tube feeders, and Niger thistle for tube feeders. Put some of the scratch grains in the alley to pull English Sparrows and all the doves away from the tube feeders. Put some of the scratch grains under tree or shrub branches for cardinals and the more unusual winter sparrows and thrushes. Crushed pecans on the ground will attract yellow-rumped warblers and in some years, red crossbills.

It depends on what you want to see. Spring is an excellent time because summer residents return and migration brings large numbers of shorebirds and warblers passing through on their way north. Many shorebirds remain visible through much of Summer, depending on the weather and water levels. Southward moving shorebirds are seen again in early Fall along with Peregrine Falcons. Wintering waterfowl also begin to arrive with peak numbers occurring from November through February.

All birds love the Lobworms (Lumbricus terrestris) but they can be too big, sometimes we have small Lobs on offer, other than these, we find Dendrobaena (Eisenia hortensis) go down really well.

The symptoms vary widely, from none or mild illness to highly contagious and rapidly fatal epidemics. The contagious form has sudden onset, severe illness, and carries a death rate of nearly 100 percent. The virus can alter from being low-risk to high-risk very quickly through genetic mutation.

Baths can be offered as a commercial bird bath that attaches to an opening in the cage or as a dish (such as a terra cotta plant saucer) placed on the bottom of the cage. Some people add Saniclens to keep the water from becoming too polluted since the birds will drink from their bath water. Some people only make the bath available for a limited period of time to limit the amount of pollution it will collect and to limit the amount of bath water they drink.

Answer: Properly aimed and well shielded security lighting always helps law enforcement or security personnel see suspicious characters when a crime is being or about to be committed on a property, however, they need to be watching at the time to prevent any crimes.
