Yes, the content on the DVDs is organized in such a way that it is easy to create your own CD-Rs from DVD. However, there are some things that must be paid attention to: Keep the path identical. For example, if the path to Windows XP Professional on a DVD is \English\WinXP\Pro\, be sure to put all of the files on the CD-R in the same path. CD-Rs can only be created and used in accordance with the MSDN Master End-User License Agreement (EULA).

Retiring a disc: I don't need that directory of MP3s backed up any more, etc. Or maybe I was using that cd-r to temporarily shuttle a bunch of OTR shows from place to place. Dent and Ding sale: maybe I closed the disc before I wanted to and re-burned that session again on a fresh disk. Maybe I put the same file on twice or something else goofy like that. These are like "cosmetic damage" - the CD will work just fine, the contents are just not what I wanted them to be for my own usage.

A CD-R and CD-RW is basically a recordable CD. However, whether or not a DVD player capable of playing a regular CD can play a CD-R depends on the quality of the CD-R. Some CD-Rs recorded on higher quality CD burners can play perfectly. However, if you used a lower quality CD burner to make your CD-Rs and CD-RWs, then there's a chance they won't play. Also, a CD-RW (as opposed to a CD-R) have lower light reflection, so CD-RWs are even less likely to play.

Obviously there are advantages to recording a DVD-Video volume on inexpensive recordable CD rather than expensive recordable DVD. It would be perfect for testing and for short video programs. Unfortunately, you can put DVD-Video files on CD-R or CD-RW media but you'll have a hard time finding a player that can play the disc. The Philips DVD170 industrial player seems to be the only player that can play DVD-Video content from CD-R and CD-RW discs.

The same process is used to create both data CDs and data DVDs. To maintain complete control over the layout of your data disc, create an ISO-9660 disc image and upload it as your source document. This image contains the layout of all the files and directories which will be present on the burned disc. All discs must contain a minimum of 2MB of data. If the content you upload is smaller than 2MB, please add additional content to reach this 2MB limit.

I've never heard of CD-RW drive that can read DVD discs...which doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one. I would do an internet search of the CD drive model you have to see what it can, in fact, read. I would assume, however, that no CD drive will read DVDs.

You can use Folder Guard to restrict access to the CD/DVD drive of your computer, but such protection will be in effect only on your computer, where Folder Guard is installed and configured properly. Yes. Writing to CD and DVD discs is supported as long as you have some packet writing software installed on your computer. It usually comes bundled as a part of larger CD / DVD recording software packages and makes your CD or DVD drive act as a standard, transparently write-enabled drive. Packet writing software uses UDF-formatted CD and DVD discs, and allows GRBackPro to write to your CD / DVD drive by treating it like a hard disk or a floppy diskette, using the regular drive letter.

Those that damage the discs. Kind #2 is the most common. Kind #3 comes with a warning in the manual (you do read product manuals, right?) that tells you not to play CD-R discs. It is possible that some players in category #2 are actually in #3 and just aren't labeled as such. Yes and no! If the disc has been left OPEN it can be written to again, although no existing data on the disc can be overwritten. This is known as multi-session recording. Data is written to the disc in sessions and if the session is left OPEN then another session may be added later (up to 99 sessions can be written to a single disc!). Generally, when writing to CD-Rs they are CLOSED by default, meaning that no further writing can be done.

CD-Rs have a metal reflective layer that is essential for the disc to function. The best reflective layer material is gold because it is chemically inert - meaning it will not react and degrade as other metals might. The second best layer is silver, which is more reactive chemically, but generally cheaper and currently more widely available. Mitsui, HHB, Apogee and Quantegy, among others, make discs containing gold.

While the DVD Movie and Game discs you buy or rent in the stores appear to be "silver" or "gold", they are usually made from aluminum coatings, over a clear layer that has been mechanically pressed with pits or holes to encode the data that the lasers in the DVD players decode into music and video signals. DVD Video discs that are made this way do not require the light sensitive dye layer used in DVD-R discs, and so they appear clear on the bottom, or nearly so. They never have to be "burned".
