Yes. Modest amount of remote dial-in access is available free of charge to members of the Whitman community through Whitman's pool of thirty-two 33.6kbps modems. To connect to modem, you must first request a remote access account via a web-based request form at https://secureserver.whitman.edu/dialin/. To ensure fair access to this limited resource, remote connections are limited to 4 hours per session and a maximum of 8 hours per day.

There are several methods for computer connection, but it appears that Ethernet 10BaseT is emerging as the most predominant method. Although it probably would be cheaper to produce the cable modem as an internal card for the computer, this would require different printed-circuit cards for different kinds of computers, and additionally would make the demarcation between cable network and the subscriber's computer too fuzzy.

CMU is maintaining the following telephone line for SLIP and PPP connection of users from remote locations: 412-268-9000 Windows 9x an later, Macintosh MacOs 8.0 and later: follow the standard instructions in your operating system to create a PPP connection using the above telephone numbers and the default settings. The TCP/IP settings should contain the nameservers mentioned here; the IP, gateway and broadcast addresses are established automatically after the modem connection is done.

Yes, there are many manufacturers that offer broadband "routers" that are capable of allowing more than one computer to share a single internet connection and Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP all have an Internet connection sharing feature built in that can be used with your Suburban Broadband service. Your computers need to be connected to each other with category 5 cabling or a wireless networking (WiFi / 802.11) router.

Check to see if the phone line is connected correctly to your system. Make sure it is connected to the LINE jack of the modem. Go into the Device Manager and remove all items listed under "Modems".
