The purpose of this rule is to ensure that those persons performing covered tasks on the pipeline have been evaluated and determined to be qualified both to perform covered tasks and to recognize and react to abnormal operating conditions. Training may be an integral step in preparing for evaluation; however, it is not required under the current provisions of this rule (but ? see FAQ 1.11).

One ABA approach is Pivotal Response Training. PRT incorporates principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to teach behaviors that seem to be central to wide areas of functioning. No. HP certifications are granted based upon passing the exams necessary to prove knowledge and skill levels. Attendance in training courses is not required. However, the hands-on skills that are tested in the exams are best developed in the courses that are provided as part of the program framework. HP highly recommends that candidates take the courses associated with each exam or have equivalent hands-on, on-the-job experience.

Both Pivotal Response Training (PRT) and Discrete Trial Training (DTT) incorporate the major principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to teach specified behaviors to individuals with Autism or other Developmental Disabilities. DTT approaches are highly structured and useful when acquisition skills are a major focus of a child's program. PRT involves a structured, play-based format, to target skill development.
