Quad band literally means four (4) bands. Most people come across the term when it is used to describe a GSM mobile phone. The GSM standard originated in Europe, where mobile phones occupy two frequency bands: one in the 900-MHz range and one in the 1800-MHz range. When GSM technology crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, it was impossible to reuse the same European frequency bands since those had already been allocated to other devices by the FCC.

A Quad-band GSM phone operates on the four internationally designated GSM frequencies- 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. The capability to seamlessly handover between the four bands offers operators major capacity gains. The 850 frequency is used in North America, Latin America and parts of the Caribbean.

It is peripheral specific. For example thru a USB peripheral it is Quad-band and thru Compact Flash it is Tri-band.

Dual band phones tend to work in the UK and Europe and most of the world (GSM 1800 and GSM 900), whilst in America you need a phone that can take GSM 1900 so most often a Tri band or Quad band phone is the best option.

Feeding any multi-band array often is a challenge. The frequency range varies from 14 MHz to 28 MHz and the source impedance for each band may vary 2:1 in value. A quad is an array of three or more separate antennas, each with an independent feed point and elements occupying electrically different locations in the array. Methods of feeding in the past have been to co-locate all the feed points and using a single coax feed. With an antenna tuner in the line this method can give good results.

The USB Modem is tri-band which means it supports the 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM network frequencies. Quad-band devices also support the 850 MHz network frequency. This means that in a small number of countries - mainly in the Caribbean - the device may not work.

This lets the public know which service provider the phone will work best. Dual band phones usually works on only one providers network while the Tri Band phone works on multiple networks but weeker on one due to the absent of a band.
