Actually you can but we do not recommend it. Our clear UV GUARD, UV GUARD II Exterior Wood Finish and UV GUARD Deck & Fence Coating, which are the basis of all of the colored versions of these products, have specific chemical UV blockers and stabilizers, but all logs will age/darken under any non-film forming stain and this will be more noticeable under a clear/transparent stain. Additionally the pigments act as additional sun blockers/reflectors giving a longer life to the finish.

Ultimately the decision is yours. We believe all wood should be stained because it seals better & enhances its beauty. Stain is an upgrade and does cost more. If your decor supports a natural finish, we will be happy to accommodate you.

Always start with a light or medium formula when you try a new brand. Light/medium/dark varies considerably from product to product. In general, the department store brand dark is heavier than the drugstore brand dark. And don't forget that two applications of a light or medium formula may give you better results than one application of dark.

Minwax® Clear Brushing Lacquer is a beautiful, clear protective finish for wood and metal. It is ideal for interior wood surfaces, and can be used over bare or stained wood. It dries to the touch in 30 minutes, ensuring a smooth, dust-free finish. Recoat in only two hours, with no sanding needed between coats. The finish flows evenly across the wood to provide a smooth surface.

We recommend lacquer because it is the best finish we have found for our products. The lacquer protects the wood from moisture, and at the same time penetrates into the surface, bringing out the natural beauty of the wood...lacquer makes the wood "come alive" (not to sound too corny, but it's true). The lacquer also provides a semi-glossy surface that is easy to clean, and looks great.

While I can't guarantee all those things, I will do my best at making recommendations and steer you in the right direction if you need some help picking out parts and materials. Keep in mind that what we build are custom basses and the bass you order will end up sounding how it ends up sounding. I use the best materials I can find. If you're putting the good stuff into a bass build it only makes sense that bass will end up sounding great.

We do offer "certain styles of pre-primed balusters" but we do not do any painting or staining of any kind.

Clears with no pigmentation do not offer UV protection or color retention. Our products contain Transparent Iron Oxide pigments which absorb UV radiation while allowing visible light to pass through. Walbernize is a type of wax that has been used on Airstream Plasticoats since the first trailer was coated. Should be applied two times a year, more if you want. It was first used by Airstream when they were transporting trailers. They applied it to the front of the trailer so that when bugs and dirt got attached to the trailer in transit, they could easily clean the coach when it arrived at the dealer lot.

Clear-coating was first offered as an option in 1963 for those who did not like the prospect of annually giving their trailers a once-over. It became standard the following year. Clear-coating still requires annual applications of "Walbernize", available from Airstream dealers.

The clear braces themselves don't stain, but the clear alastic ties sometimes stain with the use of nicotine and coffee products. These alastic ties are changed at every visit.

All natural stones are porous materials and therefore, are subject to staining if not maintained properly. In granite, the same porosity that allows for staining also allows for easy stain removal. In most cases, stains can be prevented by quickly wiping the spill. If a spill is left overnight, especially if the liquid is grease, oil, coffee, or wine the granite will usually darken. To remove the stain, a poultice should be applied, which may pull out the stain from the granite.

When using Sophisticated Finishes Iron Metallic Surfacer and Rust Antiquing Solution, you can control the look of the rust. The longer you let the final coat of Iron Metallic Surfacer dry, the darker the rust color will be, approximately 30 minutes for a light orange red rust, 12-24 hours for a deep red brown rust. If you are using Rust Antiquing Solution directly on a rustable metal, you cannot control the color of the rust. It just reacts naturally to the metal.

Although traditional wisdom has it that French polish is more conducive to sound, hence is better, the issue really isn't that clear. More to the point, the question is how hard and thick the finish is, especially on the top. Although thick, hard finishes will dampen sound, lacquer may be applied just as thinly as French polish, and if properly applied seems to work just as well. There are other considerations as well that should be kept in mind.

Clears do not provide color retention. They fail quickly and the wood underneath will gray. We have shaded our clear topcoats with transparent iron oxide pigments to provide extended color retention and protection for the wood, yet maintain a clear natural appearance.

The reality is that in manufacturing the log home, you have removed all of the natural defenses that trees have. Since they are no longer living, the sap and resins no longer nourish the fibers.
