A form of waste reduction which involves energy being generated from waste. The most common examples are an incinerator and a pyrolysis plant (combustion in a vacuum).

Depending upon where you live, there may be interest in your local area for some of the different energy crops for co-firing or fiber production. You would have to check with local electricity utility companies or fiber processors (paper and board manufacturers) to see if there is market for these intensively managed crops before establishing them.

A computerized tracking system is used to monitor all wastes received at the facility. As part of this tracking system, all drums received at the plant are bar coded. This is similar to the bar coding used at grocery stores to keep track of their inventory. Computerized controls monitor the levels of all storage tanks on a continual basis.

In a typical desktop PC, nearly half the power coming out of the wall is wasted and never reaches the processor, memory, disks or other components.2 In offices, homes and data centers, the added heat from inefficient computers can increase the demand on air conditioners and cooling systems, making the computing equipment even more expensive to run. Numerous environmentalists all over the world are encouraging people to save the planet by not carelessly throwing their batteries away, especially the rechargeable ones, and instead make new things (beautiful and even useful things!) out of them.

After your hauler picks up your garbage, the hauler delivers it to a waste-to-energy facility where it is dumped on the floor or in a pit and either processed into fuel or fed directly into combustors and burned to create electricity or steam. Emissions are carefully controlled and monitored to limit air pollution. Ash from the combustion of the garbage is managed in a landfill. Only 10% of the volume of your original garbage becomes ash, the rest becomes energy.

When solid waste decomposes, it creates methane which is 23 times more potent than C02 in term of its impact on greenhouse gas production and global warming. Waste to energy facilities eliminate that production of methane and reduce greenhouse gases. Human activities that are most responsible for causing mercury to enter the environment involve the use and consumption of products containing mercury and disposal into the waste stream or wastewater system. THOUSANDS of canisters of highly radioactive waste from the world's most nuclear-energised nation lie, silent and deadly, beneath a jutting tip of Normandy. Above ground at the site in Beaumont-Hague in France, cows graze and Atlantic waves crash into heather-covered hills. The spent fuel, vitrified into blocks of black glass that will remain dangerous for thousands of years, is in "interim storage".

The whole issue of reprocessing and re-using spent fuel is fraught with controversy - which is the reason most western governments had followed the U.S. lead of banning the practice since the 1970s. Most spent fuel from current nuclear power generation is so highly radioactive that anyone who tried to steal the material would be fatally poisoned almost immediately. The waste provides its own security perimeter.

The California Energy Commission ensures that needed energy facilities are certified in an expeditious and environmentally acceptable manner. The energy facilities certification process is designed to be rigorous, fair and consistent, while eliminating duplication and regulatory uncertainty. The power plant site certification process applies to thermal energy facilities that produce 50 megawatts (MW) or more of electricity. Power plants below that threshold are reviewed by local agencies.

The animals’ consumption habits will dictate the potential quality of the manure-based compost. With this in mind, and as long as both materials are composted fully, both will be beneficial to your plants.

The waste is taken to the Iona Sewage Treatment Plant every week. There, the waste is treated by a process called Secondary Treatment. Secondary treatment removes the harmful materials the wastewater contains so it can be safely released into our waterways.

The definition of 'waste' contains many provisos, but as a general rule it is 'any substance or object which the producer or the person in possession of it discards or is required to discard'. It must also fall in to one of the categories set out in Part II of Schedule 4 of the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994. One category is described as 'Products for which the holder has no further use (e.g. agricultural, household, office, commercial and shop discards, etc.).

Whether or not a substance or object is discarded as waste must be determined on the facts of the case and in light of judgments issued by the European Court of Justice and our national Courts. It is not possible to say whether any particular substance, in any particular circumstance is discarded as waste. There is, therefore, no definitive list of what is and is not waste. But it will often be clear that a substance is waste.
