We award grants to tax-exempt organizations classified as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations – public charities as defined by the Internal Revenue Service (not classified as a private foundation), schools, and public agencies. Priority is given to organizations located in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties in Central California, with limited grants to organizations in Northern California.

No. Organizations can apply once in twelve-month period to either the Youth Fund or the Foundation for a grant, with the exception of public and private schools, colleges and universities. Public and private schools serving K-12 can apply more than once per year to the Youth Fund. Colleges and universities may apply separately to the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and the Youth Fund.

The Foundation considers only those organizations that have received a permanent, tax-exempt ruling determination from the federal government, including documentation verifying 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) status, and (as applicable) the State of California. Further, organizations must have a current full, certified, audited financial statement.

If your organization does not meet these mandatory requirements, your proposal cannot be considered. Please review these mandatory requirements very carefully before deciding to devote the time and effort to prepare a proposal.  If you do not qualify as an eligible organization, you should not submit an application.

The Foundation can only provide support to nonprofit organizations that have officially been designated as such by the IRS, or schools. Additionally, the Foundation only considers requests from nonprofit organizations that have been in existence for at least three years.

Your school can apply Pell Grant funds to your school costs, pay you directly (usually by check), or combine these methods.
