We normally tell students they should be in the B+ range to be competitive. The admission process incorporates 1) overall GPA; 2) prerequisite GPA; and 3) GRE score. Each of these areas is weighted equally. Thereby, the applicant could remain in the competitive range if they were low in one area i.e. overall GPA and up in the other two. Historically, applicants with GRE scores below 900 are not competitive.

Admissions decisions are based on the the applicant's full spectrum of credentials. This includes standardized test scores, as well as previous academic performance, rigor of previous academic programs and institutions, recommendations, career and volunteer experience, and commitment to one's chosen field. We have found that at the master's level, undergraduate grades are the best predictor of graduate academic success.

The BBS Program does not publish GPA or GRE data on our applicant pool. Our main guideline to applicants is that although a high GPA and high GRE scores are attractive to admissions committees, they do not guarantee admission. On the other hand, GPAs below 3.0 and GRE scores below 500 Verbal, 500 Quantitative, or 3.0 Writing are detrimental to your application.

The range of GRE scores for the verbal section was 640-750 and 600-800 for the quantitative section. The average GRE score for the verbal section was 664 and 760 for the quantitative section. The average GPA for students entering the program was 3.7.

The Prerequisites needed include Principles of Biology(an introductory course), Computer Programming(at least one semester equivalent to Georgia Tech's CS 1301), Organic Chemistry(an introductory course), Calculus(one year, equivelent to MATH 1501, 1502), and Physics(one year.) GPAs have ranged betwe en 3.4 - 4.0 for this program but no minimium has been established. The general GRE should be taken with scores at least 1800(Fall '99.)

What we are most interested in is the applicant's research potential. These scores are just one of many criteria we consider. There are no minimum scores. We much prefer students who have taken challenging advanced courses to those with top scores on rudimentary courses. There are many ways for applicants to demonstrate their research potential.

Your junior/senior major GPA should be above a 3.0; however, if there are extenuating circumstances for a lower GPA, you may still be considered for admission. Please address those issues in your personal statement. The GREs are only one of the factors we consider, so again, if there are extenuating circumstances, use your personal statement to address this issue.

The GRE scores and GPA are very important to gain admission to the ESPM graduate program. The average GRE scores for those we accepted in the program for Fall 2005 were: Verbal: 625/84%, Quantitative: 698/73%, and Analytical: 5.10 or 701/83%. The average GPA for those accepted was 3.60. The GPA is based on undergraduate course work done in the last two years, i.e. junior and senior status.

Of the 28 students currently enrolled in the program, 30% are women, 5% are underrepresented minorities, and 30% are international. 100% of our students are full-time; we do not have a part-time program.

There are no fixed standards for acceptable scores, and the GRE scores are just one of many factors in the admissions decision, but most successful applicants have verbal and mathematics GRE scores of 550 or higher.

We really cannot say based only on your GPA, GRE and (for international students) TOEFL scores what your chances of admission and a funding offer are. We look at the entire application, including your courses (and grades in them), your personal statement, and your letters of recommendation.

In general, we look for at least a B undergraduate average, but the overall record is of primary importance. Individual programs may be interested in how an applicant did in specific courses, whether the undergraduate background course work was adequate for the program, and whether the applicant showed a pattern of improvement during undergraduate study. There is no specific cut-off for the GRE.

On the GRE, the minimum score required by the Graduate School is 850 (combined verbal and quantitative). The minimum undergraduate GPA required by the Graduate School is 2.6. The average GRE score for a Community Counseling graduate student is approximately 1100 and the average GPA is 3.5. With that said, a deficit in one area can be compensated by strength in another area.

First we look at the applications on their individual merit. We look at all of the materials and try to arrive at an accurate portrait of the applicant that includes experience, the breadth of previous coursework and recommendations. We do see scores and GPAs in all ranges. In general, however, competitive GRE scores will be in the 600s for the verbal section, in the 600s for the quantitative section, and 5 or above (on a 6-point scale) for the writing section. Competitive GPAs will be 3.

The Graduate School minimum GPA is 3.0 but we like to see at least a 3.25 in courses relevant to the area in which you apply. As for GRE scores, we don’t set absolute numbers because each year’s applicants are judged against all others in that year only. Given that our programs are very competitive and highly selective, you will want to be sure that you do the best you can on all areas of the Graduate Record Examination.

Please remember that these are averages and not minimum requirements. When making a decision, we review the entire application not just test scores and GPA.

We do not currently have a minimum requirement for GPA or test scores. However, the incoming class in 2007 had an average GPA of 3.31-3.88, an average SAT score of 1000-1200 (critical reading, math), and an average ACT score of 22-27.

For 2006, admitted applicants received average scores of Verbal 587/76, Quantitative 760/82, and Writing 4.64/55.

Although an applicant’s performance on the GRE is an important criterion for admission, we do not have minimum scores below which we will not admit. If you are granted a waiver of the TOEFL requirement, please make sure that your recommenders address your ability to communicate and to conduct research in English.

The admissions committee looks at all aspects of your application when determining your admissions status. This includes your undergraduate GPA, your GRE score, your letters of recommendation, your essay, your professional experience and your other accomplishments.

To be competitive you need scores of at least 500 in the Verbal and Quantitative sections and a score of at least 5 in the Analytical section, however, the average scores of the students we admit are much higher. Click here to see more precise figures.

Typically, the average verbal and quantitative score is 950 – 1040, although the overall range is greater.

The weight given to standardized admissions exams varies from program to program and discipline to discipline. If your exam score is not reflective of your academic accomplishments and capabilities, it is often a good idea to ask one of your faculty recommenders to address it in the letter. This can be particularly effective if you have taken advanced courses or done independent study with that professor.

We require an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better for graduate studies at CSM. International students must submit minimum TOEFL scores of 550 (PBT) or 213 (CBT) or 79 (IBT) with minimum section scores as follows: We do not have set minimums for the GRE however scores are required for most programs. No. The College of Law requires the LSAT, but the Andrew Young School will permit students to substitute the LSAT for the GRE in the admissions process.

GRE scores are not required by the Graduate Division, nor by the Department. However, students should note that some outside funding agencies may require GRE scores, for example, in nationally competitive funding agencies. Applicants should consult all the relevant sources of funding before deciding whether to do the GRE or not.
