JumpStart supports a wide variety of peripherals in the field including printers, digital cameras, bar code readers, signature capture pads, and credit card swipe. The devices can connect to the handheld via Bluetooth, USB cable, or asynchronous connection. The data captured (such as signatures and pictures) is incorporated in the data stream just like any other data and stored on the database.

Virtual Peripherals are typical microcontroller peripherals implement in software. This is possible with the SX microcontroller because of its high clock speed, efficient instruction set and its simple but powerful real time clock counter interrupt. The SXC compiler simplifies the implementation of Virtual Peripherals by providing a function interface the the RTCC interrupt.

Checkout currently supports all USB barcode scanners that emulate a keyboard, the USB versions of the Star TSP 100- and 700-series receipt printers and any cash drawer that connects to them. Jumpstart is the RAA's program to provide work for young, unemployed South Australians on a 12 month contract basis. Continued support from members' contributions ensure the ongoing success of this program. BusinessSuite is a “self-healing” system that ensures that no data is lost during the replication process. Once the handheld is powered up again (if a new battery were installed for example), the software determines the last packet successfully transmitted and picks up from that point. The amount of data stored on the handheld is really only limited by the amount of memory on the device. The latest BlackBerrys have 64 megabytes of RAM, for example.

One of the best things about reading is that it can take place anywhere and everywhere. Group reading events will be held at schools, libraries, stores, hotels, playgrounds, offices, and homes. The focus is on the data format; HTTP/HTTPS is not required as a transport protocol. As long as a publisher's feed files and their dependencies (such as enclosures) can be transported to subscriber (for example, through a store-and-forward relay), any protocol will work.

If DBAN does not detect a SATA controller running in native mode, then run the controller setup program and enable the "legacy PATA support" option. (ie: "Push <F2> to enter setup" when the computer starts.) SATA drivers for new computers will be added to DBAN as they are published for Linux. Drivers for Microsoft Windows are incompatible with DBAN and cannot be added to DBAN.
