A directed study enables a student to do in-depth research on a topic or to carry out a creative project at a level beyond that offered in course work. Only Juniors and Seniors are eligible for directed studies. A directed study form must be completed and returned to the Office of the Registrar before a student is allowed to register for the directed study. Directed Studies range between .50 and 2.

Any directed studies must be approved by the appropriate division chair and the Dean of International Programs prior to departure.

For the purpose of this award, "independent research position" means a position that is held by an investigator who is permitted by his/her institutional policy to apply for R01 grants, with an appropriate commitment of institutional facilities to be used for the conduct of the proposed research.

There are two steps required in signing up for an independent study. First, the student and professor need to fill out the College's independent study Project Agreement Form. The advantage of taking the course as directed studies is the opportunity to work through the material under the guidance of a course mentor. You will have opportunity at least once a week to be in contact with your mentor and ask questions related to the course material, as well as other questions you may have related to your ministry and personal study. The EOHS Program has close ties with numerous city, state, and federal agencies as well as both private and not-for-profit firms. Many of these serve as field internship centers for our students. All biology majors are required to do an independent laboratory research project. They select a research director and project while enrolled in Introduction to Research. Many students elect to undertake their research during the summer between their junior and senior years at major research institutions throughout the United States.
