The "official" development environment for Erlang is Emacs, and there's a special emacs mode for Erlang. This can be found in lib/emacs/erlang.el under the source tree. VI fans have several options. There is a colouring mode for nedit. VIM has a fully-fledged Erlang mode. A basic version is included in VIM as of version 5.6, a much more complete version is available for download. Some Windows developers use Ultraedit. Danie Schutte contributed a wordfile which provides syntax highlighting.

Erlang is named after the mathematician Agner Erlang. Among other things, he worked on queueing theory. The original implementors also tend to avoid denying that Erlang sounds a little like "ERicsson LANGuage".

Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) is the mechanism by which new medical devices that could impose "significant risk" to patients/subjects are tested in the U.S. An IDE allows an investigational device to be utilized in a study in order to gather information on the safety and efficacy (effectiveness) of the device. Open Source Erlang/OTP can be downloaded from the open source Erlang site. The site provides full source code as well as binaries for Windows machines. This is probably the best place to go to make sure you're getting the latest version. The Debian Distribution of GNU/Linux includes various versions Erlang in different releases, under interpreters. Precompiled ready-to-go installers for a variety of platforms are available from the Comprehensive Erlang Archive Network (CEAN).

The documentation delivered with open source erlang as both man pages and html is the most up-to-date reference to both the OTP libraries and Erlang itself. On unix systems, the easiest way to read the man pages is erl -man gen_tcp . Supported versions of Erlang from Ericsson include printed and bound (in book format) versions of this documentation . Programming Erlang (Joe Armstrong) is being written by one of the creators of Erlang. The book is expected to be published in June 2007.

When you write Erlang code you want to share, there are quite a number of ways to share it. The place to announce such things is the Erlang Questions mailing list, or, in the case of patches, the Erlang Patches mailing list. Where you put the actual code is up to you. If your code is a modification to an existing part of OTP, attach a patch to your post to the erlang-patches mailing list. There's some useful general advice on making and sharing patches here.

erlang-consulting.com and erlang-services.com both run training courses (primarily in London and Stockholm, but also in the US, Asia and Australia) aimed at businesses. Many universities run courses either partly or wholly about Erlang. Courses about functional programming are also useful for getting a solid grounding which will then let you easily learn Erlang by yourself.

During the 1980s there was a project at the Ericsson Computer Science Laboratory which aimed to find out what aspects of computer languages made it easier to program telecommunications systems. Erlang emerged in the second half of the 80s was the result of taking those features which made writing such systems simpler and avoiding those which made them more complex or error prone. The people involved at the start were Joe Armstrong, Robert Virding and Mike Williams.

Note, however, that most IDE-RAID devices are not really hardware implementations. DBAN uses these devices as regular IDE controllers.

The AspectJ team directly provided components for JBuilder, Forte, and Emacs and supported the open-source AspectJ plugin project at http://eclipse.org/ajdt which uses the AJDE API support for IDE's. Supporting new IDE's is a matter of building on the AJDE API's, mostly likely adopting one of the existing open-source IDE extensions as a design template.

For some reason the IO designers made the connector "swapped", so a spacial cable must be made that "swaps" pin 1,2 then pin 3,4 and so on. The cable must be very flexible to get a proper install without the chance of a short circuit. If a normal cable was used, it would have to be folded over several times to get to the drive and would cause too much "bow" in the case.

The idea of connecting a harddrive to Commodore 64 was born in 1994. We wanted to create a low-priced solution using a modern technology. The other known systems used either SCSI harddrives, which were (and still are) more expensive than the IDE ones, or MFM harddrives, which were slow and obsolete and moreover needed special controller to connect. IDE drives, which we decided to use, are fast, easy to programm and rather cheap. First experiments began in 1994.

All Modelworks products are distributed only as evaluation/demo versions. To unlock the distributed versions you will need to register the IDE by going to help/register and entering your order number and email address. A unique platform like Mono deserves a unique IDE like MonoDevelop that can take full advantage of the framework capabilities. Features like code completion, integrated unit testing, class browser, etc. would be much more difficult to implement for example in a C based IDE. The Mono platform also provides some features that are ideal for the development of an IDE.

First of all, the connector is a mini laptop-style (2.5") connector, so you'll need an adapter and an external power supply if you want to use a standard hard drive. If you want it to stay in the case, you'll want a 2.5" laptop hard drive. People have been quoting $30-80 prices for some very nice 2.5" multi-GB hard drives on PriceWatch, so that might be something to think about. This is the hard part: You have to make/modify your own IDE cable.

The largest user of Erlang is Ericsson. Ericsson use it to write software used in telecommunications systems. Many (dozens) projects have used it, a particularly large one is the extremely scaleable AXD301 ATM switch. AXD301 has several hundred people working on it and the code volume has reached about 850 kloc of Erlang (and 1 Mloc of C/C++).

The Standard Erlang spec aims to define the Erlang language. There is currently no compiler which actually implements everything exactly the way Standard Erlang specifies. This specification is quite precise; it's intended as a reference, not a bedtime read! Compiler and tool implementors will find this useful, as will advanced Erlang programmers.

The Jungerl is a public CVS server which provides access to more than fifty Erlang contributions, including an SSH client and the Erlang wiki. The source to the VM and OTP libraries is currently not available from a public CVS server. Since full source is freely downloadable, it would be feasible for someone to maintain such a server and keep it in sync with official releases from the OTP group. So far, nobody has felt their need for CVS was large enough to justify the amount of work required.

Posting a short note to erlang-questions@erlang.org is probably a good start, especially if the subject-line clearly identifies the post as a job request/advert.
