Frequently Asked Questions

Did you hike alone?

FAQ
Yes and no. For 99.7% of the time I hiked alone. However, there were very few times when I was truly alone. Almost every day I would bump into people I knew and every night I would camp with other thru-hikers.

Which direction did you hike?

Like the large majority of thru-hikers, I chose to hike south to north starting at Springer Mountain in Georgia. Just like the first thru-hiker, Earl Schaffer I too wanted to "hike with spring", following the seasons northward. I also anticipated sharing my experiences with a lot of other hikers and this is where they were! Deciding to hike south presents some interesting obstacles.

How was your hike?

FAQ
No question is harder for me to answer, yet I managed to sum it up in three words: A Good Time. It really is a hard question to answer. You may as well ask a Zen Buddhist what Enlightenment is like. Was it hard? Yes. Was it easy? Yes. I met lots of people and saw so many new sights and different things. It was incredible and incredibly hard. I loved every minute of it and hated quite a bit of it. It was sunny and it rained. I laughed. I cried. It was better than Cats.

How can I prepare for a thru-hike?

Welcome To Pacific Crest Trail Association - FAQ's
Successful completion of the PCT requires a high level of physical and mental conditioning, as well as the skills covered in the The Pacific Crest Trail Hiker's Handbook by Ray Jardine. (The Hiker's Handbook is now out of print but Jardine has a new book out called Beyond Backpacking in which he expands on his theories and techniques). Ray Jardine recommends trimming every conceivable superfluous ounce from your pack since the effort to carry each ounce is greatly amplified over 2,600 miles.

What is an "off-trail" hike?

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
On off-trail hikes we'll leave the standard marked trails to explore ridges and valleys literally off of the beaten path. Often we'll follow old road beds or animal trails and we may spot evidence of old settlements such as wells and foundation stones. Off-trail hikes can be more strenuous since we'll need to weave and duck around more obstacles (streams, downed trees, occasional thorn bushes, etc). We generally only hike off-trail from October to May.

How many miles per day did you hike?

Home - Photos - Travel - Movies - More
For a full day of hiking I averaged about 24 miles. The mileage varied quite a bit depending on the terrain. Some of the trail is very steep, some of it is at high elevation, some of it is cross country, some of it is on roads... all of these things can speed up or slow down one's pace. The furthest I hiked in a day was ~37 miles, my shortest day of full hiking (when I wasn't headed in or out of a town, or limited by the NPS) was about 15 miles.

Why did you decide to hike for the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation?

Our Hike Across America for Bone Marrow Disease
I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in 1997, and it was a shock. I had never heard of this disease or others like it, and I was really scared. The complete story about my journey with Aplastic Anemia can be read here. I thought that while hiking the American Discovery Trail and hiking through many big cities, small cities, countryside, etc. that I would meet a lot of people. This would be the perfect opportunity to spread the word about these diseases – to raise awareness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Grand Canyon Tours
Most first-time Grand Canyon hikers walk uphill at an average speed of one mile per hour. Monitor the amount of time it takes you to get down to any location; it can take twice that amount of time to cover the same distance going out. This "rule of thumb" seems to work well regardless of individual fitness, age, and/or length of stride.

Do I need a permit to hike in the wilderness?

Inyo National Forest - Frequently Asked Questions
Wilderness Permits are required, year-round, for ALL OVERNIGHT TRIPS into the John Muir, Ansel Adams, Hoover and Golden Trout/South Sierra Wildernesses. Day-use wilderness permits are required only on the Main Mt. Whitney trail. All trailheads in the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wildernesses have a daily quota from May 1 through November 1, meaning a limited number of people are allowed into the wilderness each day, per trailhead.

Do I need to be in good shape to hike?

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
If you jog or walk during the week you should be able to handle our hikes with no problem. If you're sedentary most of the week, expect to be tired and maybe sore by the end of the day or on the following day. Many of our regular hikers were worn out the first time they hiked with us, but after several weeks found their level of fitness had greatly increased. Drinking plenty of water and eating during the hike will help to keep your energy up and prevent soreness.

Will you still hike if it's raining/snowing/etc?

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, we'll still hike even if it's raining, snowing, sleeting, or sunny. If you're properly attired, then you can still have an enjoyable hike. The only time we've cancelled a hike was due to a forecast for strong winds (having tree branches or small trees break and crash near you isn't fun!).
Related Questions

What is a moon or night hike?

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Night hikes are scheduled fortnightly (every other week) on Thursdays. These hikes will usually meet around 7pm and will be much shorter than our normal Saturday hikes (usually 3-6 miles compared to 8-14). If we hike under clear skies we should be granted views of the stars (around a new moon) or moon shadows and the possibly of hiking without artificial light (near a full moon). Night hikes are a new addition to our schedule in 2007, and if they prove popular we'll try to hold them regularly.

Did the snow in the North Cascade's of Washington hinder your hike?

PCT Questions and answers
Not at all since I had consistent high mileage days throughout the walk and was in Canada on August 12th, thus avoiding most chances of winter weather, which can sometimes hit the North Cascade's in early September.
Related Questions

Did you hike south to north? north to south? does it matter?

Home - Photos - Travel - Movies - More
I hiked from North to South. The snowpack up north was light in 2001, which greatly helped with the start. Generally, one starts in mid-late June for a southbound CDT hike... Late April to early May for a northbound hike.

This is our most frequently asked question. An average hiker, in good weather can hike around 1.5 miles per hour, so the total time from the trailhead to the top can be done at around 8 hours. During the course of the day hikers will finish anywhere between 4 to 12 hours. Everything depends on weather, physical conditioning, how well you eat and drink throughout the day and your own determination.
