What's in your handmade soap?

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions-Handmade Soap - Blue Ridge ...
We use a base recipe of four oils: Olive, Castor, Coconut and Palm Oils. We refer to soaps made using our four oil recipe as Regular Recipe Soaps. To increase the moisturizing ability of our soaps we sometimes add goat milk (we have 50+ varieties of goat milk soap), or shea and cocoa butters (we have about 25 fragrances of shea soaps). These three levels of moisture will take care of most skin types. We even make 100% Olive Oil Castile soap and Grandma's Ole Lye Soap made with lard.

What is handmade soap?

Mineral Creek Essentials - Made in Alaska Handcrafted Artisa...
Soap is water, lye (sodium hydroxide), and oils. When a lye solution is mixed with fat, the chemical reaction is called saponification. The results are 3 parts soap, and 1 part glycerin; which is sought after for its ability to moisturize the skin. Handmade soap that is properly made has no lye left in it, but cannot be made without it.

Do you use tallow (animal fat) in your handmade soap?

Epicurean Shea Butter Company Frequently Asked Questions
No. We do not use tallow (animal fat) or other animal products in our soaps. The common animal products used in soap making are tallow, lanolin, milk and beeswax. Tallow can be found in most of the commercial soaps produced today and is usually listed as sodium tallowate. Most people are familiar with latex from the tissue beneath the bark of the rubber tree responsible for the multitude of rubber products. Shea butter contains natural latex.

How should I take care of my handmade soap to make it last?

handmade handmade soap faq, all natural body products and ha...
Handmade soap is a special product. Because it contains glycerin, it can retain more moisture than other soaps. To extend the life of your handcrafted soap, place it in a well-draining soap dish. (see our massage, salon & spa page to purchase proper soap dishes) Keep unused bars in a cool, dry place out of direct contact with water. A good soap is like a good wine, the longer it cures, the better and more mild it becomes. Our soaps will last approximately 3 weeks for single use.
Related Questions

Why is handmade soap more moisturizing than other soaps?

About the Soap
Handmade soap is more moisturizing because it contains glycerin, a natural by-product of the soap-making process, and because it has a bit of extra oil--superfatting, left over. Also, it does not contain the commonly-used dyes, perfumes, detergents and other synthetic ingredients, which can be harsh for human skin.

What is the difference between handmade soap and milled soap?

Woodspirits presents New Products
They are created in very different ways. In milling, a process developed in Italy and correctly called "plodded", soap starts not with whole vegetable and animal fats and oils, but with substances withdrawn from these fats and oils. These substances are called isolated fatty acids. The fatty acids are used to make milled soaps because they produce a harder soap that can withstand the process of milling and forming that is required to hold the designs and logo's of modern soap.

How is handmade soap different from commercial soap?

Frequently asked questions at Coconut Coast Handmade Soap Co...
Our soap is handmade using the cold kettle or cold process method. This old fashioned method of soap making creates and retains glycerin, which helps to moisturize your skin. You won't have that dry, itchy feeling you get from using commercial soaps. We do not use any animal or petroleum by products. During commercial continuous process soap making, the glycerin is removed, and sold separately.

Truly natural products are rare in mass manufactured products, even at the more expensive 'Bath and Body shops'. Many products claim to be natural, but are they really? While these mass produced natural products must contain some natural ingredients to be labeled as natural, they commonly have chemical detergents and other additives. READ THE LABEL. Notice the artificial chemicals such as sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (detergent) and harsh preservatives.

I have sensitive skin, can I use handmade soap?

Frequently asked questions at Coconut Coast Handmade Soap Co...
Yes. For those of you with sensitive skin, we recommend that you do try a handmade soap. We think you'll be surprised at how mild handmade soap really is. One of our younger clients suffers with eczema and tells us that his skin condition improves greatly when using handmade soap. He's especially fond of our Cinnamon soap. He's told us that the Lavender soap is really good for his skin, but he'd rather not smell like a bunch of little purple flowers.

Why does handmade soap need to cure, and how long does that take?

handmade handmade soap faq, all natural body products and ha...
Handmade soap needs to slowly cure over time to harden. As the bars harden, they become more mild. Like a fine wine, the longer the handmade soap cures, the better it is. We utilize the discounted water cold process method of soapmaking which allows us to cure our soaps for 2 weeks before they are ready for sale. i.e. Saponification has been completed and all traces of lye is used up and not remaining in the finished bars. Optimally, handmade soap should cure for 4-6 weeks.

Handmade soap is very moisturizing. When I use it, the water beads up on my skin in the shower. Furthermore, no artificial fragrances are used in Olde Crone’s, which means people with sensitive skin can relax, knowing that natural ingredients are used, and shouldn’t irritate the skin. Please make sure you read the ingredient list of the soap you are purchasing, if you wish to only use vegan products. Some of my soaps contain honey and/or goat milk.

Frequently Asked Questions
The production is still made in the traditional way, the pieces are hand thrown or hand casted, when the bisque is dry, it is fired the first time for about 24 hours, after that it is dipped in white glaze and, when it's dry, the decoration process begins. It is important to know that the decorator does not see the true colors during the decoration, the brilliancy of the colors is visible only after the second firing, which also last about 24 hours.
