The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program identifies, evaluates, registers, and preserves the state's historic and cultural resources and seeks to instill a preservation ethic in future generations of Arkansans.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's education coordinator is available on a limited basis to travel to your school for a classroom presentation. These are free to the public. AHPP also offers a variety of lesson plans that encourage students to learn more about their built environment by investigating their own neighborhoods and communities.

Scheduled field trips include an introductory video in the new theater, a one hour tour of the five historic houses, living history characters, log house pioneer program (which includes textiles, cooking or candle-dipping depending upon request), museum store visit and a self-guided tour in the new galleries. All six agencies of the department have staff members who can speak to schools and community organizations.

The Advisory Council is responsible for commenting to federal agency officials on undertakings that affect historic properties. The Advisory Council is an independent federal agency that carries out Section 106 reviews, advises the President, Congress, and federal agencies on historic preservation, and provides education and training.

Historic preservation is the practice of recognizing, protecting, using and appreciating our nation's diverse cultural resources so that generations to come may benefit from them. Encompassing a wide range of resources--including houses, neighborhoods, commercial buildings, downtowns, bridges, religious buildings, schools and battlefields--historic preservation is also an economic development tool that has proven to be an effective way to revitalize neighborhoods and downtowns.

The Department of Arkansas Heritage refers genealogy requests to the Arkansas History Commission or the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies in Little Rock, Arkansas. Historic preservation revitalizes blighted and economically depressed neighborhoods. The ripple effect caused by quality preservation projects raises the property values of all neighboring properties. Oklahoma City, like many cities, has experienced tens of millions of dollars in economic benefits from preservation. HP infuses heritage tourism dollars into a community. And, historic preservation brings additional trades to the design and construction industries.

In Oklahoma City, historic preservation districts basically fall into two categories. They can be a National Register District, basically a recognition that the district is historically significant, or they can be a Historical Preservation or Historical Landmark District. These types are zoning districts, designated by City Council as an area that has special significance, and they are subject to design review when modifications are made to properties in the district.

The Transportation Equity Act for the Twenty-First Century of 1998 (TEA-21) is important to historic preservation because it allows for "transportation enhancement activities" in respect to areas served by the transportation project.

The term SHPO refers to the State Historic Preservation Officer. Under Section 101(b) of NHPA, the SHPO is appointed by the Governor to administer the State Historic Preservation Program and to reflect the interests of the State and its citizens in the preservation of their cultural heritage. In Kentucky, the SHPO is the Executive Director of the Kentucky Heritage Council. The term SHPO is also used informally to refer to the State Historic Preservation Office.

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) is an independent Federal agency that promotes the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our nation's historic resources and advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy. The ACHP also issues regulations (36CFR800) to implement Section 106 of NHPA and oversees the 106 Review process. If a historic property will be adversely affected, the Federal agency must notify the ACHP and seek their guidance.

historic preservation commission is created by a local ordinance passed under the Indiana State Law (I.C. 36-7-11) which enables local governments to create preservation commissions. A commission is a group of three to nine residents of the community who can designate local landmarks and local historic districs, review exterior restoration and alteration plans in the districts, and can evaluate demolition requests.

Preserving an older structure preserves a link to the past. No matter how modest, an older building is a product of the cultural heritage of its region, the technology of its period, the skill of its builders, and the materials used for its construction. Properties with this link to the past help serve in creating historic districts.

The plan includes the preservation of the significant buildings. Initially DHHS will occupy most of them, and then FDDP expects that appropriate projects will apply to the park authority to renovate and use additional buildings for the public benefit. As examples: arts venues, museums, and technology demonstration. Since the park is in the front yard of NCSU, FDDP hopes that the university would choose to renovate and occupy some of the buildings for public outreach purposes.

Preserving existing structures maintains the unique character and fabric of the community and a tangible link to local history. In compiling the information necessary to complete historic designation survey sheets, property owners and the Commission create a respository of information on the history of the structure, its inhabitants and the surrounding area.

Currently, the job market for Historic Preservation is excellent, and all indicators suggest that the will be steady growth in coming years. There are two levels of regulation in our city. If a project receives federal funds it must go through a Section 106 review by the State Historic Preservation Office. If a structure is located within a historic preservation zoned district, all exterior changes to the structure must be reviewed by the Oklahoma City Historical Preservation and Landmark Commission, staffed by the Oklahoma City Planning Department.

It is estimated that there are more than 30 additional districts that could be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also estimated there are several hundred individual buildings outside of these areas that could be listed on the National Register.

The length of time required to obtain a degree is determined by the specific program in which a student is enrolled and depends on individual circumstances and progress. Students obtaining a specialization in preservation via the M.Arch. program require one-and-a-half years. Typically, pursuit of the M.S.H.P. and M.S.C.R.P. specialization is a two-year endeavor. The doctoral degree should be achieved in four to six years.

Section 106 of NHPA requires each Federal agency to identify and assess the effects of its actions on historic resources. The responsible Federal agency must consult with appropriate State and local officials, Indian tribes, applicants for Federal assistance, and members of the public and consider their views and concerns about historic preservation issues when making final project decisions.
