Frequently Asked Questions

Did you have to do a lot of research to write these books?

The Castle in the Attic & The Battle for the Castle
Yes every book requires research, but it's especially true when you're writing about the Middle Ages. I visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York City where I live and walked through the Arms and Armor Hall. I listened to Gregorian Chant and other medieval music. I read about castles. I visited castles in Ireland and England. For THE BATTLE FOR THE CASTLE, I went to look at the rat lab at a local university. I took my children to see the Morris Dancers who hold a festival every May in Vermont.

Did you write a lot when you were a teenager?

Margaret Buffie
I wrote a few short stories in class and that's about it. There wasn't the same emphasis on creative writing when I was young – not like the terrific programs available today. And of course, there were very few Canadian writers for kids to identify with when I was younger. Canadian children's writing has only really blossomed in the past fifteen years or so.

Do you do a lot of research for your books?

Questions and Answers
Yes, I always try to find out all I can about the subject matter in each new story and during this early stage all sorts of new ideas can suggest themselves. With The Deptford Mice trilogy, I incorporated some of the local history of Greenwich and Blackheath. In the Alchymist's Cat, I researched into the Black Death and the fire of London, while for the Wyrd Museum it was the Second World War and Norse Mythology.

I use the web a lot, but I'm also on a couple of great writer's loops and have also been known to call someone up cold turkey (like the guy at the liquor store when I needed to describe a certain type of champagne or the wonderfully helpful Forensic Pathologist at the Dallas Crime Lab) or send an email-like this really great horse trainer in Canada.

How long did it take you to write these books?

The Castle in the Attic & The Battle for the Castle
It takes me about two years to write a novel and that was true for both the CASTLE books. A year for the first draft, some months off to think about it and then six more months or so to revise it. Everything I write, I rewrite. I've come to believe that rewriting is simply part of writing. It doesn't mean that I did it "wrong" the first time.

F.A.Q.: marypeacefinley.com
First I get an idea that really really really really excites me. Then with that inspiration, I think and scribble notes and make webs of ideas and ask myself lots of questions like “What if….?” Or “What’s this person like? What does he want?” Sometimes I write about what I’m going to write “for real” later on. Or I write out questions for myself, like “What would happen if ……?’ All that is part of planning or plotting.

My husband and I lost a fortune on our new "dream" home, despite winning a technical legal victory. Short of sickness, injury or death, it is the worst experience any consumer could ever have. We were so devastated by the legal battle and unfair court verdict (and we proved breach of contract) that we felt compelled to write about it; the result was Crooked House. Writing is a catharsis that many victims of injustice resort to.

Why did you write under a different name for some books?

ALT.BOOKS.DEAN-KOONTZ FAQ
Many reasons. One primary reason was that I always had the desire to write in multiple genres, while my publishers wanted me to always write the same thing. They felt that writing in more than one genre would confuse book buyers, so for marketing purposes they pushed me into multiple names.

FAQ: Ann M. Martin's Books | Scholastic
I love to work from a detailed outline, but Paula enjoyed letting her stories unfold as she wrote. After first discussing what we thought our characters were like, where they lived, how they dressed, and even what color hair they had, we began our journey into the unknown on a letter-by- letter basis.

How many books did you write as Chris Curry?

true FAQs
Four. Winter Scream and Trickster, the first two, are out of print, but occasionally turn up in used book stores. The second two, Panic and Thunder Road, are also out of print as Curry books, but are alive and resurrected (or will be) under the name of Thorne. Panic has been released as Bad Things (March 2002) and in 2004 (I think), Thunder Road will be reprinted, probably with its original title.

There are a lot of flash card programs around. Why did you write another one?

Günther's Open Source Software
I began to learn french in spring 2000. It was annoying to carry that stack of flash cards all the time with me. So I tried to find a flash card program on the internet, but none fitted with my requirements. I just wanted a replacement for these tiny flash cards made of cardboard. After a month the first version was fulfilling its purpose. So I used it on a daily basis. Some years later I wanted more features and implemented them.

Question. What did Nostradamus write?

Nostradamus FAQs
Answer. Apart from his professional works (in which no one is really interested) he produced a number of prophetic works. We discern between the Centuries and the Prognostications. The Prognostications are like an Almanac. They contain a series of Predictions about the next year. Because these predictions were fulfilled (or not) more than 440 years ago few are interested in them. The really interesting stuff is the Centuries.

Answer: I figured out that if I count it as being paid on an hourly basis, I've made $2.50 an hour writing my books - far less than minimum wage. There's not a lot of money in writing books, unless you're Stephen King or something. It is cool, though, to see your book in a bookstore.

When did AI research start?

Basic Questions
After WWII, a number of people independently started to work on intelligent machines. The English mathematician Alan Turing may have been the first. He gave a lecture on it in 1947. He also may have been the first to decide that AI was best researched by programming computers rather than by building machines. By the late 1950s, there were many researchers on AI, and most of them were basing their work on programming computers.

There is much which is worthwhile but not listed. See the full lists of Asimov's works for more information.

Some of the most consistent comments about my books from readers over the years have been "I dearly love your heroes," and "Do men like this really exist?" It became apparent that the basic attraction in the men I created was the mystique of the Southern gentlemen arch-type. The combination of strength, honor, courtesy, self-deprecating humor, and fearless tenderness that they displayed touched an unexpected chord.
