The best way to be sure of getting a hardback copy of the book is to buy it as soon as it comes out. The hardbacks are allowed to go out of print when the paperback copies come out approximately one year later. When deciding which format to put a particular book into we carefully consider the nature of the text and who is likely to purchase it. As hardback is more expensive it is unsuitable for student texts. We often put practitioner texts into some form of hardback as this makes them more durable. However, this does have an impact on the price of the work and additionally is only suitable for texts over a certain size.

McCammon doesn't sign books sent through the mail, so the only ways to get signed books are to catch him at one of the planned book-signing appearances he'll be doing in 2002, or to purchase signed copies from book dealers. That's a tough one. You could attempt to send a copy to Doubleday and then have Doubleday forward it to Vidal at his home in Los Angeles. But I doubt a top New York publisher would do something like that. Vidal used to live in a small town in Italy where everyone knew him. But now he lives in Los Angeles, so you couldn't really send a book to "Gore Vidal, Los Angeles," and hope to have it find him.
