Adobe PostScript® Type 1 is a worldwide standard for digital type fonts (International Standards Organization outline font standard, ISO 9541). It was first developed by Adobe Systems for use in PostScript printers. Although Adobe is a leader in the design and manufacturing of Type 1 software and maintains the standards for Type 1, hundreds of companies around the world have designed and released more than 30,000 fonts in the Type 1 format.

Most customers who ask this question want to determine which format they should be purchasing. If this is your situation you should purchase the TrueType version (if it is available) as it is the easiest to work with and easiest to install on your computer and is well-supported by operating systems and programs. The PostScript or “Type 1” font format was developed by Adobe in the 1980s, several years before the release of TrueType.

If neither your X server nor your X font server supports you can try one of the TruType font servers: xfstt (http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/fonts/) or xfsft (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft/ .

Postscript fonts consist of two files, a screen font and a printer font. As it is used today it is a format developed by Adobe and adopted by other font foundries. It is used primarily by high-end imagesetters who prefer it because the relationship between screen image and printed output is more reliable. In most cases you need Adobe Type Manager to use Postscript fonts effectively. TrueType fonts consist of a single file which contains both the screen and printer versions of the font.

Most fonts downloaded from the web come packaged in an archive file, usually ZIP for Windows or SIT for Mac. So the first step is to open the archive and extract the font(s). Windows Millenium and Windows XP can handle ZIP archives natively. Right click the ZIP file and choose Extract All. Follow the Extraction Wizard to extract the files into the folder of your choice. All other versions of Windows require a third-party application to handle ZIP archives.

If for some reason you need to have both formats of the font, you can e-mail us at customer_service@TypeArt.com to request that we send the second format for no additional charge. Depending on the circumstance, we may ask that you pay an additional licensing fee to cover the installation of the fonts onto another computer.

While XFree86 does not, at the time of writing, natively support TrueType fonts, there is a number of third party solutions. Some information about these options is included below. The XFree86 project is not responsible for any of these; please send any inquiries about them to relevant newsgroups or, eventually, to their authors.

If you're using the TEXT option in MasterWorks, there is a check box option on the TEXT PROPERTY box labeled "TTF". Check that box if you want MasterWorks to display your system TrueType fonts. You can then select and create lettering from those TrueType fonts found on your system. You may also digitize TrueType fonts yourself by using the File > Import TTF option to bring the text into MasterWorks as artwork segments. This happens because the .jpg file is a bitmap image or raster file.

AutoPunch is not suitable for digitizing TrueType fonts. There are plans to release an optional HyperFont add-on for the Futura? program.

OpenType fonts are a relatively new font format, they are not always backwards-compatible with older operating systems. Major OS and application developers (Apple, Adobe and Microsoft) have made noteable attempts to accomodate users of older applications and operating systems. However, since their software was developed before the advent of OpenType, the available support is limited.

If you have a PC, then ordering the TrueType version of the font is recommended, unless you have a particular reason for ordering the PostScript. If you are running a Mac, then we have always recommend PostScript (Type 1) in the past. The PostScript versions tend to run more efficiently on a Mac and tend print more quickly. We have recently encountered reports, however, that the PostScript fonts may not function properly with Mac OSX.

TrueType is a font format-i.e., a way of describing character shapes and sizes. TrueType comes with Windows 3.1 software, so many people have it. Type 1 is another popular font format, which comes with Adobe Type Manager software. Font formats don't express graphics or images, tell the printer where to place characters on the page, or provide a way to send your document to the printer. Adobe PostScript, however, is a page-description language that tells your printer what to print.

Most people naturally associate TrueType fonts with text. Arial, Courier New and Times New Roman are all examples of standard TrueType fonts containing text. There is, however, another standard TrueType font called Wingdings that contains symbols instead of text. Typing ‘abc’ produces symbols rather than text. We use a similar principle when producing a logo as a TrueType font.

MathMagic Type 1 PostScript fonts are based on the PostScript technology, which was designed to get outputs of high resolutions with laser printers and other typesetters. You can use these fonts to download to the printer or RIP to print more clearly and faster. These PostScript fonts are mainly for DTP users who use MathMagic XTension with QuarkXPress, or for those who use the EPS format with other graphic software.

Copy .pfb fonts to your PSFonts directory, or leave them where they are on your machine. Then edit FONTRES.DAT to include the paths for the new fonts and their alii. PS fonts must be included in /Lincoln/LincPage/FONTRES.DAT. They can have any filename and extension, but they must be identified appropriately in FONTRES.DAT if their name is not the same as the name used by the getfont operator in the PostScript file. Linux Xprt build from http://xprint.mozdev.org/'s source supports TrueType fonts out-of-the-box (starting with the 008 development tree; xprint.mozdev.org's releases <= 007 do not support TrueType fonts) and and does not require any special actions. Sun's Xprt on Solaris (/usr/openwin/bin/Xprt) has TrueType font support out-of-the-box and does not require any special actions.

Many sources will tell you that TrueType fonts—a technology developed by Apple Computer in partnership with Microsoft—are buggy and unstable, and indeed, some are. But in our experience, the problems are isolated to a few bad apples (no pun intended) that we rarely see. We always try to accommodate our customers' files as best we can. So, our feeling is that if you have to use TrueType fonts as opposed to Type1, so be it.

Open the "Fonts" control panel, and click "Add". Then, look for the font files (extension *.TTF) where you copied or unpacked them. Select them, and click OK. You may install several fonts at the same time, simply by selecting them. Windows 95 requires a slightly different procedure. Open the "Fonts" folder you will find in the Control Panel located within "My Computer" icon. Then, simply copy the TrueType font into it. This type of file is generated by Windows 3.xx when a new font is installed.

Your PSW 2.00a as it is now, without the Option, digitizes TT fonts in the lettering part of the software with a Complex Fill step satin or satin stitch. With Complex Fill stitches, you only have one stitch inclination. With step satin fills, this may give an adequate finished result, but usually not as pleasing as the built-in fonts. With Satin fill stitches you can have very long stitches, which are easy to catch and snag.

When printing the same document to both a 300 dpi device and a 100 or 200 dpi device, you may frequently see a difference in font size. Though the fonts are scaleable, the scaling will only be to the nearest dot. A TrueType character rendered to 37 pixels tall on a 300 dpi DeskJet, will be 24.7 pixels tall to be the same size on a 200 dpi fax. Since only an integral number of pixels can be used, 24.7 must be rounded to either 24 or 25 pixels.

Regular fonts are designed primarily to be printed at high resolution. Pixel fonts are designed at low resolution especially for screen display. When you view a regular font on the screen, you are seeing an approximation of what will appear on a printed page and it is usually compromised because of the screen's relatively low resolution.

The current PostScript output on systems with font-config involves rendering the fonts as bezier curves. This gives an (almost) perfect output, but doesn't allow PostScript tools to operate on the fonts. If you want to get output using PostScript fonts, use the EPS export filter marked as "using PostScript Latin-1 fonts". To use this from the command line for conversions, add --export-to-format=eps-builtin to the command line.

Type 1 fonts are the most reliable font to use in printing. They have a screen and printer version (.pfb and .pfm extensions for PC) -- both must be included when you submit your fonts to us. Developed by Adobe, Type 1 fonts are easier for imagesetters to read. True Type fonts, developed by Apple and Microsoft, are contained within one file -- a .ttf extension (i.e., webdings.ttf). Some True Type fonts do not provide complete character sets and can be unreliable with imagesetters.

TrueType fonts have to be printed as graphics which means that a lot of data needs to be sent to the printer. Current serial and parallel ports have a limited speed which means that the printer will often have to stop and wait until it has received a complete line of data. Our drivers contain some 'resident' fonts which use the font that is built-in to the printer.

Please install KanjiKit and KanjiKit TrueType fonts into different directories. The installation program automatically separates these for you. If you install additional fonts later, they can be added to the current font directory (default is c:\kitfont).
