What are DNS servers? What does it have to do with my account?

RYDIA.NET
DNS stands for Domain Name System, or a large system which answers questions about DNS lookups. If you host a domain with rydia, whenever anyone in the world punches your domain name into their browser, the browser will need to figure out what IP address our server has. So it asks its local DNS server, which doesn't know, then asks the root DNS servers, which don't know, which then ask our DNS server, which tells them what it is.

What DNS servers does Maintain support?

Maintain FAQ - Maintain - Confluence
Maintain currently mainly supports djbdns (or tinydns, how it is sometimes called). However, every standards compliant nameserver is technically supported if you set up a tinydns server to be fed by Maintain and you make your secondary ("slave") name server pull the information from the primary server via zone transfers (AXFR). With this constellation, Maintain can support BIND name server, for example, which has been successfully used on production system in the past.

DNS servers are what actually makes a domain name work. By work I mean that they convert a text label to the information like IP addresses that the Internet is based on. (See 'What is a domain name'.) This is not to say that they handle e-mail, or serve web pages. Instead they direct web surfers and e-mail messages to the correct computers.
