Shadow data occurs when you delete a file, drag it to the trash, or reformat your hard drive. files are deleted or dragged to the trash and then emptied, the areas they were saved on are not erased, but simply freed up for another layer of data to be written over it. Even after a new layer of data is written over the area, the old files are not completely erased.
