Jan 97 Can I install compression on a FAT32 partition?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
No. Interestingly, if you use FAT16 with OSR2, and you try to run Compression Agent, you will get an error telling you to install Plus!. Let me know if you can find a workaround other than installing Plus!. My question to Microsoft: Why did you guys put Compression Agent in OSR2, and then disable it in this way? Seems misleading to me to include a component in OSR2 that (on purpose) doesn't work.

Jan 97 Are there issues with FAT32 and third party Disk Managers such as OnTrack or EZ Drive?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
Yes. The largest partition you can create with these Disk Managers is 2.1GB. If your HD is larger than this, and you are using a Disk Manager, you must use multiple partitions. If your MB BIOS is dated Jan 1996 or older, you may have to use a Disk Manager to access all of an IDE HD larger than 2.1GB. See this Knowledge Base Article for other issues with Disk Managers.

Feb 97 What is FAT32?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
Versions of Windows95 older than OSR2, as well as any DOS version, operate on a file system called FAT16 (or FAT12 in some cases). The existence of large hard drives has led to large partition sizes, which mean large cluster sizes and wasted space: Under FAT16, a smaller cluster size is better, because a small file takes up a whole cluster if there is even one byte in it; the leftover space is called "slack.

Apr 97 Is FAT32 compatible with my Motherboard?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
Older 486 motherboard BIOSes do not support IDE hard drives bigger than about 512MB; some older Pentium motherboard BIOSes (as recent as February 1996) do not support IDE drives over 2GB. If you run an IDE HD off such a motherboard, then you have to use a third-party disk manager to access the entire drive. However, these limitations have nothing to with FAT32, that is, if you can get FAT32 on the drive, it will work.

May 97 How do I format a (hard) disk with FAT32?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
With the FDISK utility in OSR2. FDISK will only allow you to put FAT32 on drives larger than 512MB. Inside FDISK, you must enable "large disk support," to choose FAT32. After exiting FDISK and rebooting, FORMAT (use the OSR2 version only) the drive. NOTE that you must manually reboot after exiting the OSR2 version of FDISK, this is not automatic as in previous versions of FDISK. If you do not reboot between FDISKing and FORMATing, you will get strange-looking error messages.

May 97 Is there a FAT16 > FAT32 conversion utility?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
PowerQuest has released one, as part of Partition Magic version 3.0. It is possible to "force" an upgrade of an existing Windows95 installation, and then convert FAT16 to FAT32 after installation of OSR2. See below for details. Case Study: On a 1.2GB drive, formatted as a single partition, before conversion from FAT16 to FAT32 (via Partition Magic 3.0), there was 58MB free space. After conversion, there was 268MB free space. Your results will vary.

C4. I believe the Linux NFS server will not export a fat32 partition. Is that correct?

Linux NFS faq
The FAT file systems can be exported, starting with the early 2.4 kernels, but if used extensively, it may cause grief. First, only those operations supported by the exported file system will be honoured. Operations such as "chown", "link", and "symlink" are not supported by these file systems, and will fail. Read/write/create etc., should be fine, as long as the files remain relatively unchanged.

Mar 97 How does FAT32 affect system performance?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
For most users, FAT32 will have a negligible performance impact. Some programs may see a slight performance gain from FAT32. In other programs, particularly those heavily dependent on large sequential read or write operations, FAT32 may result in a modest performance degradation." Basically, the more clusters on your hard drive, the slower the performance. This is true for any file system, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS, whatever.

May 97 Should I install OSR2 on my laptop?

Windows95 OSR2 FAQ
I only have solid information about IBM Thinkpads. The word from Thinkpad support is the following: Any PCI-based Thinkpad is compatible with OSR2, and in fact, OSR2 is recommended. HOWEVER, you MUST update your Thinkpad BIOS to the latest version (available from the Thinkpad support site). If you do not have the latest BIOS, your Thinkpad may not boot with OSR2 installed, especially if you are using FAT32. Furthermore, the "hibernate" utility/file will not work on a FAT32 partition.

Is Partition Resizer compatible with drive compression software (like DoubleSpace or Stacker)?

zeleps.com
The program itself works fine with these, since it doesn't consider them as drives. Partition Resizer scans ONLY physical drives for partitions. But it shouldn't be run from a compressed drive that resides in a partition that will be resized or moved. If you're uncertain about that, just run Partition Resizer from a bootable floppy disk. Absolutely. Long filenames are not affected, since the program doesn't mess with directory and file descriptors.

What are the pros and cons of FAT32 and NTFS?

Windows XP FAQ Frequently Asked Questions - Bootstrike.Com
NTFS offers a smaller cluster size (0.5) compared to FAT32 (4). This means more space for you. NTFS also allows compression and additional security features. Many people recommend formatting to a NTFS partition rather than converting the drive for speed reasons. You can go to this Microsoft article for more information, which lists only the pros . Some cons I've heard: Virtually no recovery tools for a faulty NTFS volume. If you backup this isn't a big deal.

Can I install PostgreSQL on a FAT partition?

Running & Installing PostgreSQL On Native Windows FAQ
PostgreSQL's number one priority is the integrity of your data. FAT and FAT32 filesystems simply do not offer the reliability required to allow this. In addition, the lack of security features offered by FAT make it impossible to secure the raw data files from unauthorised modification. Finally, PostgreSQL utilises a feature called 'reparse points' to implement tablespaces. This feature is not available on FAT partitions.

How do I re-install VoxPro onto a different drive or partition?

Frequently Asked Questions
You may uninstall and re-install VoxPro on any drive or partition that you wish. The only real issue is what happens to the existing user accounts. If you are leaving all the user accounts where they are, you need only copy the two files VP_Config.vpc and VP_Hotkeys.vpc from the old installation folder to the new. When you start VoxPro in its new location, it will see the user configuration data, which is already correct.

Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this, and I've installed the latest firmware updates for both drives.

Music files primarily come in two varieties: "compressed" and "uncompressed." An uncompressed music file is the music stored as faithfully as the computer can hold it, just like the music on normal audio CDs. These are large files and hold every scrap of data the computer needs to reproduce the music as closely as it can to the original recording. These files are often named with .WAV or .AIFF extensions.

Can I install WRTbwlog completely on the r/w partition?

WRT54G Bandwidth Usage Log
Sure you can, but you'll most likely damage your flash memory when running WRTbwlog on the flash partition over a longer period of time (a few months to a few years). WRTbwlog is freqently writing data to it's ./data subdirectory. And flahs chips are just not build to for so many write cycles. It seems, that modern flash chips can endure 100.000 - 1.000.000 delete/write cycles before they are starting to fail. And I guess in the WRT54G, Linksys is not using the most expensive flash memory.

The linux partitionn will remain there but LILO (if you have it on the MBR) will be overwritten by Windows and the LILO prompt will not appear on bootup. You will need to boot into Linux using a bootdisk (or loadlin) and run 'lilo -v' from there to replace LILO back on the MBR after installing Windows!
