The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that a child have his or her first oral health care appointment around age one. ADHA suggests an oral health visit as soon as a baby's first tooth erupts. This depends on your oral health status and any additional sources of fluoride that you may be receiving. Talk to your oral health care professionals about this topic for individualized information.

Dental offices vary on their policies of missed appointments. Ask your dentist about his or her policy. Many dentists ask that you call to cancel an appointment at least 24 hours in advance. This will allow time for office staff to find someone else for your scheduled appointment. Those who don't call to cancel may be charged all or a portion of an office visit.

Routine dental visits should be before the age of three years and earlier if you have any concerns about your child’s teeth. Some dentists like to see babies as early as one year of age to make sure that parents are well informed on preventive measures. If you are pregnant or have a young baby ask your dentist on one of your own regular visits when s/he would like to first see your baby.

Take your child with you when you, or a friend, visit the dentist. Children like to model the adult behavior, so will often copy others. Dental personnel want to encourage young children and will be helpful in giving them positive experiences.

While the damage that dental fluorosis causes to the internal matrix of the teeth is permanent, the visible staining that fluorosis produces can be cosmetically treated by a dentist. Treatment options for fluorosis vary and will depend in part on the severity of the fluorosis and what you can afford (some of the treatments are very expensive). For mild forms of fluorosis, the most common form of treatment is "abrasion.

Review medical history, chronological health history, family history and environmental living conditions. Discuss chief complaint of patient and priority of oral and systemic treatment needs. This can include but not be limited to drainage remedies, oral chelating agents, nutritional supplementation, etc… Dental images include- a panorex and bitewings (minimum), others are suggested depending upon the circumstances.

Dental appointments are scheduled on Fridays beginning at 9:00 am (8:00 am beginning Monday, June 11, 2007) for the following week. As there are limited dental clinics each week, the appointments fill up quickly and it may take weeks to get an appointment.

During dental treatment, bleeding sometimes occurs. And because of this, bacteria from the mouth can possibly enter the bloodstream and work their way to the heart. This presents a risk for some persons with cardiac abnormalities because the bacteria may cause bacterial endocarditis, or serious inflammation of the heart valves or tissues. When taking an antibiotic, the risk will be reduced.

Whether or not it is feasible to bring your child to a class or appointment depends upon the child's needs and the type of services you are receiving. Well-behaved children are always welcome at UniversaLink appointments, and childcare is generally offered for parent education classes and workshops. For other classes or appointments, we recommend that children are not brought to the Center because it may be difficult to supervise them while you are receiving services or participating in class.
