I have an annuloplasty ring. Is it safe for me to be tested with MRI?
Mechanical Heart Valve, Biological Heart Valve Questions and...Yes. All Carbomedics mechanical heart valves and annuloplasty rings have been tested in between the range of 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla for excessive heating and displacement. The test results indicate that no displacement occurred and the impact from heat was negligible. Note however that some image distortion can occur in the vicinity of the valve. The complete report of the test results are available on the website.

Related QuestionsIs MRI safe, even if I am pregnant?
FAQThere are no known adverse effects on the human body from MRI scanners used today. Unlike an X-ray or CAT Scan, MRIs do not emit any ionizing radiation. To date there have been no adverse reactions to pregnancy from MRI. However, to be perfectly safe we prefer to scan pregnant women only if the symptoms indicate that the scan can't wait until the baby is born and the patient signs an informed consent.
Related QuestionsHow safe is MRI?
Masep Medical Science & Technology Development (Shenzhen...The powerful magnetic field of the MR system will attract iron-containing (also known as ferromagnetic) objects and may cause them to move suddenly and with great force. This can pose a possible risk to the patient or anyone in an object's flight path. Great care is taken to be certain that objects such as "ferromagnetic" screwdrivers and oxygen tanks are not brought into the MR system area.
Related QuestionsMRI - Frequent Questions - UBCH - MRI - Magnetic Resonance I...MRI does not require any invasive techniques, nor does it use any x-rays or ionizing radiation. However, because of the use of high magnetic fields, there are safety concerns if you have a pacemaker, an aneurysm clip, or if you have a history of eye injury involving metal fragments. It is important that you accurately complete the MRI Screening form, so that our staff can determine whether it is safe for you have MRI.Related Questions

Will my heart valve or annuloplasty ring be affected by computer tomography?
Mechanical Heart Valve, Biological Heart Valve Questions and...For most cases, a blood thinner, also known as Coumadin, is typically prescribed for a limited period of time after an annuloplasty repair ring has been implanted. The time frame is generally based on how long it takes the patient's native tissue to seal the ring and no longer present a risk of thrombus/clotting formation.
Related QuestionsHow long can an annuloplasty ring implant last in a human body?
Mechanical Heart Valve, Biological Heart Valve Questions and...long as the patient remains in good health after implantation of the ring implant, the annuloplasty ring should last for the remainder of the patient's lifetime. The ring itself should become quickly covered with the patient's native tissue, essentially blending into the background. Valve patients undergoing ANY dental procedure should be considered for prophylactic treatment. Please consult your physician about this prior to visiting a dentist.
Related QuestionsIs it possible that I will be allergic to the materials in my annuloplasty ring?
Mechanical Heart Valve, Biological Heart Valve Questions and...It is very unlikely. However, if you suspect that you might be allergic to polyester, silicone, barium sulfate, titanium, or nitinol, you should discuss it with your surgeon who may arrange for testing prior to your surgery. No. These electrical and magnetic fields are too weak to significantly heat or displace the valve or annuloplasty ring.
Related QuestionsWill a tanning bed affect my valve or annuloplasty ring?

Related QuestionsWhat is the difference between a rigid and a flexible annuloplasty ring?
CarboMedics - Mechanical Heart Valve, Biological Heart Valve...A rigid ring, once implanted, fixes the valve in a specific shape. A flexible ring, once implanted, allows the valve to take whatever shape is natural for it and probably can conform to the changes in shape and position of the left atrioventricular junction during the cardiac cycle. Either can be used for mitral valve repair, it is surgeon preference on which they implant. Carbomedics offers both rigid and flexible rings. AnnuloFlo is rigid and AnnuloFlex is flexible.
