OJS supports indexing of non-text files via external conversion applications. The 'text' in a PDF file is stored as a page description, a sort of image file really, so the text that appears in the acrobat viewer doesn't actually appear literally in the file. If you are on a Unix-like system you can see this for yourself by doing 'strings *.pdf'. Simple Search really is *simple*, it looks for the plain-text strings that are specified on the form in the specified files, it won't find them in a PDF file.

While you technically can use MS Word as your text editor I really suggest that you don't. Use Notepad instead. Word tries to write HTML for you and will make a mess of your document. I don't recommend it until you are more familiar with using HTML code and tags and can recognize what is supposed to be there and what MS Word has coded in for you. It is supposed to be a feature, but it is not a particularly helpful one.
