In what order should I read the Ekumen, Earthsea, and Catwings books?

Le Guin: Answers to a Questionnaire (FAQ: Frequent...People write me nice letters asking what order they ought to read my science fiction books in the ones that are called the Hainish or Ekumen cycle or saga or something. The thing is, they aren't a cycle or a saga. They do not form a coherent history. There are some clear connections among them, yes, but also some extremely murky ones.

Q. Should the books be read in any order?
Welcome to the web site of best-selling author James W. Hall...I've tried to write the Thorn novels in such a way that reading them in order isn't necessary. But Under Cover of Daylight is a useful book to read so you can understand how Thorn got to be the way he is. The other novels can also be read in any order. I know some readers simply can't do that and must read them in chronological order of publication. I understand that need, but I've tried hard to make each book stand independently.

The "Redemption Series" was written before the "Firstborn Series" and there are five books and they introduce each of the family members. "Dayne" is introduced in the last book of the Redemption series. We learn that he is "famous" and his story continues in "Fame" which is the first book in the "Firstborn Series".
